There is a truly tangible quality to Farrell’s work. His music, while on paper is primed for the club, tenders a malleable quality, one of melancholy and meditation. Across ‘Birds Fly In’, Farrell utilises a diverse sonic palette; the drums cut like a hot knife through butter, complimented with dizzying beds of synthesis that feel both familiar and warped at the same time. It’s a rare feat for a track – let alone multiple – to sit so firmly and comfortably between the club and easy listening, but somehow Farrell achieves this with a maturity and dexterity usually unseen from someone so early in their career.
‘Burning From’, featuring Goya Gumbani, is addictive and unrelenting, rigid drums chasing the unstable bassline and Gumbani’s urbane, seamless flow. ‘Reversing (Phonox Mix)’, with its heavy layers contorting in unison, ebbs and flows, refusing to open up into traditional electronic euphoria; instead it retains a hypnotising idiosyncrasy, Farrell’s processed vocals a repetitive and disorienting mantra. Across ‘Birds Fly In’, Farrell’s vocals feel more confident, emotive and assured, his abilities as a vocalist perforating more noticeable than ever.
Oscar Farrell is managing both quantity and quality. ‘Birds Fly In’ is yet another right step for the artist, six singular tracks that will surely push him further into the electronic zeitgeist.
