What Should Happen to Edward Snowden?
There’s not much appreciation for nuance in the public discussion about Edward Snowden. Our editorial today tried to avoid the usual hero/traitor dichotomy of the cable news debates, saying that the public service value of his leaks outweighed the crime he committed by revealing to journalists the abuses of the National Security Agency. We called for some form of reduced punishment — a plea bargain or clemency — though we didn’t say he should be given a presidential pardon or a medal.
