Is too much emphasis put on work in modern society?
Work occupies a good portion of our daily lives. Most people work
for about 8 hours every day, and some of them work overtime. Why
do we work so much?
The first factor is business culture. Almost all employers require
their workers to be physically present at their office buildings, even
when physical presence may not contribute to productivity. For this
reason, many workers commute long hours to work.
The second factor is materialism. We live in a consumer society.
Most of us do not grow our own food, nor do we build our own
houses. We earn in order to pay for what we need, including food,
housing, and clothes. But once we get in the habit of consuming, it
becomes difficult to stop, and we sometimes confuse happiness
with material possession. So some people become eager to work
longer than necessary, just to make money.
As a result of spending too much time in working and commuting, we
lose the most important thing: health. The number of people who
have chronic diseases has been increasing recently. If we spend
more time at home, our diet will improve. Also, desk workers should
exercise more.
Work is important, but we can still change the way we work. By
changing the way we look at work, we can retain our most precious
possession - health.
