'U-20 World Cup Finalist' Kim Eun-joong to take charge of K League 1 Suwon FC
Kim Eun-joong, 44, who led South Korea to the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup for the second consecutive tournament, will lead professional soccer's K League 1 Suwon FC.
Suwon FC officially announced the appointment of Kim on Tuesday.
The club took note of Kim's leadership at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina in June and July, where he steadily led the national team to a fourth-place finish.
Suwon FC, which conceded 76 goals in the 2023 season, the most in a single season in the history of the K League, plans to lay the groundwork for a comeback next year with Kim Eun-jung at the helm.
"This year, Suwon FC's focus on attacking football and the lack of balance in the offense was painful," said a Suwon FC official, adding, "We will continue to play attacking football by adding stable football."
Kim made his professional debut with Daejeon Citizen in 1997 and went on to play for FC Seoul, Jeju United, and Gangwon FC.
Since 2014, he has been a playing coach at Daejeon, and from 2015 to 2017, he coached at Belgian fourth division team AFC Thunbiz.
He assisted Kim Hak-bum as an Olympic coach from 2017 to 2021, and made his managerial debut with the U-20 national team last year.
This will be Kim's first time managing a professional club.
"I feel a great deal of responsibility, but I clearly know what my role is," Kim said through the club, "It's a new challenge for me, so I'll do my best to live up to expectations."
"As we saw at the U-20 World Cup, Kim Eun-joong is a young but prepared coach who has steadily accumulated coaching experience," said Choi Soon-ho, head coach of Suwon FC. "He will show good results based on his clear football philosophy."
Kim's predecessor, Kim Do-gyun, who previously oversaw Suwon FC's dramatic stay in the league, took over the reins of Seoul Eland FC in K League 2 on Thursday.
Suwon FC, which finished 11th in the K League 1 in the 2023 season and faced relegation, made a comeback through the promotion playoffs (PO).
The previous day, Suwon FC held an inauguration ceremony for its eighth chairman, Kang Moon-sik, at the Suwon Traditional Culture Center.
Chairman Kang Moon-sik said, "I was deeply impressed by the supporters' cheers of 'You can do it, Suwon' during the miraculous promotion PO process. I will support Suwon FC with all my heart and soul so that it can grow into a happy citizen club with passion and effort." 슬롯
