中城城は、沖縄県のほぼ中央にある古城です。
14世紀に築城されていますが、優美な曲線を描く石垣がとても魅力的なお城でした。

The first generation of the Nakagusuku Ajis started to build Nakagusuku Castle in the fourteenth century.
GOZAMARU Seishun (?-1458) , who was the castle lord of Zakimi Castle moved to Nakagusuku Castle in 1440, following the order of SHO Chu (1391-1444) , the king of "Chuzan".

The ruins of Nakagusuku Castle is located on a hill, overlooking Nakagusuku Bay.
If you approach to the ruins of Nakagusuku Castle from the east side, You will see the stone walls of the third bailey on the hill.

The east side of Nakagusuku Castle used to be the back entrance.
You will go through the back gate to the third bailey.

From the second bailey, you will see the East-China Sea to the south-west direction.
Beyond Nakagusuku Bay, you will see the Chinen Peninsula.

The Main Bailey is also surrounded by stone walls.
The curved stone walls are very elegant.

In 1458, AMA Wari (?-1458) , the castle lord of Katsuren Castle, attached Nakagusuku Castle and defeated GOZAMARU Seishun.
After that, the princes of "Chuzan" Kingdom lived in Nakagusuku Castle.
In 1609, the Satsuma Domain invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom. Nakagusuku Castle became abandoned.

If you walk to the west from the Main Bailey, you will see the site of the main gate.
This view is very impressive and looks like an archaeological site.

Nakagusuku Castle was not damaged at the battle of Okinawa in April 1945.
Almost all the ruins remain.
The ruins of Nakagusuku Castle is designated as a World Heritage.
