福岡城は、関ヶ原の戦いで東軍勝利に貢献した黒田長政が、福岡藩初代藩主となり1606年に完成させたお城です。
現存の重要文化財の櫓もあり、規模の大きなお城でした。

Fukuoka Castle, located in Fukuoka City, was built in 1606 by KURODA Nagamasa (1568-1623).
At the Battle of Sekigahara in 1601, KURODA Nagamasa was on the side of East squad, lead by TOKUGAWA Ieyasu (1543-1616).
He distinguished himself in the battle and the East squad won.
As a result, TOKUGAWA Ieyasu assigned KURODA Nagamasa as a feudal lord of Fukuoka domain.
If you go through the "Uenohashi-Gomon" Gate, you will see the site of the "Tsukushi-no-Murotsumi".
The "Tsukushi-no-Murotsumi" was a guest house built in the Asuka Age (592-710).
A written record regarding the "Tsukushi-no-Murotsumi" says the representatives from Silla in Korean Peninsula stayed at the "Tsukushi-no-Murotsumi" in 688.
Excavational investigations were conducted and some of investigation results were displayed.
After passing through the "Omote-Gomon" Gate, you will see the "Gokinen" Turret.
The turret was built in 1860 at the end of the Edo Age.
If you walk to the south from the "Gokinen" Turret, you will see the foundation of the Main Castle Tower.
You will go to the site of the Main Castle Tower through the "Kuroganemon" Gate shown in the below picture.
As the route to the site of the Main Castle Tower is complicated and the defense of the "Kuroganemon" Gate was very strong, it seems very difficult for the enemies to go there.
You will see the "Ohori" Pond to the west from the foundation of the Main Castle Tower.
The "Ohori" Pond used to be the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle.
There are two turrets in the south bailey.
These are "Nishi Sumi" Turret and the "Kita Sumi" Turret.
The "Nishi Sumi" Turret is the original building and was built in 1853.
The "Kita Sumi" Turret was rebuilt in 1971.
These two turrets are connected by the "Tamon" Turret.
The "Tamon" Turret was built in 1854.
You will look up the "Kita Sumi" Turret and the "Tamon" Turret from the third bailey.
The white wall of these buildings are very impressive.
As the "Nishi Sumi" Turret and the "Tamon" Turret remain from the Edo Age, these two turrets are designated as important properties of Japan.
Total forty-seven turrets were built in the Edo Age.
After the Edo Age ended, many of castle buildings were destroyed.
Some of original turrets are reminiscent of Fukuoka Castle in the Edo Age.
