高野山に移住する前から、
いずれは、外国人観光客のための
通訳になりたいと思っていました。
I always wanted to be an interpreter
for foreigners.
ところが新型コロナウイルスの
おかげで外国人観光客はめっきり
減ってしまいましたので、
However, the numbers of
foreigners visiting Koyasan
had drastically decreased
due to the COVID-19、
とりあえず、最初の1年は
高野山という町を知り尽くすことに
時間を費やそうと決めました。
thus, I decided to spend the first
year for learning everything about
Koyasan.
しかし残念なことに、
Unfortunately,
自分が思い描くようには
なかなかならないものです。
Things don’t go smoothly
as you planned.
入山当初、
新型コロナウイルスは
猛威を奮いはじめ、
すぐに自粛生活を余儀なく
されました。
As soon as I arrived in Koyasan,
the Covid-19 started spreading,
and soon we were forced to stay
home.
自粛が解除されましたら、
今度は長い梅雨が始まり、
Soon after the “stay-home”
policy was cancelled, the long
rainy season had started.
その梅雨が明けたとたんに
今度は猛暑です。
Then, since the rainy season
was finally over, it’s been
super hot every day.
朝の気温が低いうちに
奥の院へのウォーキングだけは
欠かしませんが、
When it’s still cooler
in the morning, I try to walk
to Oku-no-in every day, then
ある朝、宿坊協会の前に
貼ってあるポスターに
釘付けになりました。
one morning, I found
this poster at Koyasan
Shukubo Association.
咄嗟に思い出したのは、
高野山大学院を退学したことを
知ったハワイにいる友人の
言葉です。
As soon as I saw this poster
I remembered what my best
friend in Hawaii said when
she found out I quit Koyasan
University.
「また一つの扉を閉め、
違う扉を開けて、
周幸さんが思い描く
高野山の過ごし方に
近づけるといいですね。」
When one door closes,
another opens.
Hope you will find the way
you wish for.
気持ち的には、
すぐに申し込みたいと
思いましたが、
I was totally ready to apply,
however,
TOEIC785点以上取得者
または実用英語技能検定準一級
以上の合格者対象とあります。
it requires an applicant
to take TOEIC exam and earn
785 points or more, or take
Eiken and earn Grade Pre 1 or
the above.
日本に戻ったら
すぐに英検を受けることは
考えていましたが、
I was planning to take
English Proficiency Test
as soon as I returned to
Japan, but
コロナが怖くて
山を下りれないのが
現状です。
I was so afraid of the Covid-19
that I didn’t want to leave
Koyasan.
次のドアを開くタイミングでは
ないようですが、
Although it is obviously not
a good timing to open
the door,
違うドアを見つけただけでも
新しい目標に向かい
気持ちは高鳴ります。
I’m still excited that I’ve found
the new door, which
would be my new goal to
pursue.
もしかしたら、
もっと違うドアを
見つけるかもしれません。
I may also be able to find
the totally different door
to open.
閉まったドアの前で立ち尽くしたり、
I just don’t want to stand
still at the door that I just closed,
or
閉めたことを後悔することだけは
したくないと思います。
I don’t want to regret that
I had closed that door.
