70代半ばの親切な男性がいます。
A gentleman in Oku-no-in
kindly answers all my questions.
「これは何ですか？」
What is this?
「お施餓鬼ですよ。」
It’s Osegaki.
「施餓鬼」とは、
餓鬼道に落ち、苦しんでいる
者たちに飲食を施すことです。
“Segaki” is to offer food and
beverage to hungry ghosts.
仏教では、人間が、
善悪の業因によって
行き巡る世界を六道といます。
In Buddhism, “Rokudo”
means 6 realms where
a person would transmigrate
depending on his or her karma.
天道 Deva
人間道 Human
阿修羅道 Asura
畜生道 Animal
餓鬼道 Hungry Ghost
地獄道 Hell
施餓鬼会では、
餓鬼の他に三界万霊、
そして各家のご先祖様に
対して供養が営まれます。
Segakie is not only for
Hungry Ghost, but also for
the ancestors and all souls
of the three realms.
弘法大師空海は、
「十界の有る所、これ我が心なり」
とおっしゃっています。
Kukai said that there are
10 realms in one’s heart.
ひとりひとりの心の中は
地獄、餓鬼などから
仏の世界の十の段階があり、
Everyone has a hell or
hungry ghost realms as well as
Buddha realm.
我々は時には仏のような心に、
It means we can be like
Buddha one day, and
ある時は餓鬼心が起こり
we can be like a hungry
ghost some times, and
後で気づき反省したり
します。
we regret badly when we
realized we acted like
hungry ghost.
お盆の時期には、
ご先祖さまのみならず、
餓鬼道に落ちた者、
そして、
During the obon season,
we serve offerings not
only for our ancestors,
but also
自分の心に潜む餓鬼心にも
施しを為し、
take care of the hungry
ghost in you, and
自分の中に仏心を、
満たしましょう。
let the buddhahood
be filled in your heart.
前述の男性が、
お茶碗に一杯の
ごはんをお供えしました。
I saw the gentleman
mentioned the above came
to offer a huge bowl of rice
to the altar.
サンダルばきにもかかわらず、
スキップするように
軽やかに階段を駆け下りていく
男性の顔は満ち足り、
仏さまそのもので、
He, who ran down the steps
lightly with his sandals,
looked content like a buddha,
and
餓鬼の姿は微塵も
ありませんでした。
didn’t show any signs
of hungry ghost.
