久しぶりの青空
尊敬する宗教学部長、
ジョージ田辺教授から
初めて高野山とは
如何なるところかを
聞きました。
When I attended at
University of Hawaii,
Dr. George Tanabe,
Director of the Department of
Religion, told us about
Koyasan.
教授の語る奥の院は
神聖で神秘的で
30人ほどいた生徒たちは
物音ひとつたてず、
聞き入っていました。
He told us how sacred and
mystical Oku-no-in was, and
we, about 30 students,
were so impressed and
listened to him attentively.
「高野山に行ったら、
奥の院の次にすることは....
After visiting Oku-no-in,
next, you’ve got to
「酒饅頭を食べる！」
Eat “saka manju”!
「こんな美味しいものを
食べたことがない。」
I never had eaten something
so delicious.
「場所は大門の近くだ。
忘れるな。」
The shop is located near
Daimon. Don’t forget about it.
シーンとしていたクラスが
いっきに笑いにつつまれました。
We all burst out laughing.
ジョージ田辺教授の力説する
酒饅頭のお店です。
Here is the shop that
Dr. Tanabe stressed how
delicious its manju was.
Nanpodo Honpo
場所は高野山の西の端
大門のすぐ手前です。
It’s located west side of
Koyasan and near Daimon.
大門が見えます。
You can actually see
the Daimon.
2004年と2008年に続き、
3度目の来店です。
This is my 3rd time
I came here.
毎回感心するのですが、
I’m very impressed
every time that
このお店の若い従業員の
接客はいつ来ても清々しく
the employees always
provide geniunely
welcoming service, which
また来たいという気持ちに
なります。
made me want to come
back again.
こしあんの酒饅頭と
つぶあんの黒糖まんじゅうと
ありますが、
They normally have
two types of manju, but
時間が遅かったので、
酒饅頭しか
買えませんでした。
because I was there at
almost closing time, so
I could only buy regular
saka manju.
麹が多いのか、
酸味が強く感じましたが、
田辺教授はそれを
好んだのかもしれません。
It had a strong malted rice
taste, and it was a little sour.
I guess this is what Dr. Tanabe
liked about.
高野山内で
やきもちは色々なところで
売られています。
Yakimochi is sold
all over Koyasan.
マルタカのマスターは、
The master of Marutaka said
「味は一緒だよ。」
と言いますが、
All tastes the same.
私は、こちらの
くさもちが、
一番美味しいと
思いました。
However, this kusamochi
is the best to me.
他のところより
厚みがあり、
柔らかすぎず
食べごたえがあります。
It’s thicker than any other
places, and it’s not too
soft.
甘すぎない餡も
私好みです。
Also, the sweet beans
inside tastes perfect
to me.
ジョージ田辺教授の
クラスを受講していたのは
17,8年前のことですが、
It was 17-18 years ago
when I took Dr. Tanabe’s
class, but I remember
clearly that
曼荼羅の論文で苦労する私は
he asked me having hard time
writing about Mandala,
「曼荼羅は君に何を
語ろうとしてる？」
What is the mandala
trying to tell you?
と、質問され
絶句したことが
忘れられません。
I had no idea what
he meant.
酒饅頭を食べながら、
While tasting the manju,
I thought
今なら、
曼荼羅が何を語ろうと
しているか少し分かるように
なりました.....
Now I know a little bit about
what the mandala is trying
to tell me.
と、田辺教授に伝えたい
私です。
I hope that I will have
a chance to tell Dr. Tanabe
about it.
