昨日の夕方、
(ここを走り回る....?)
ファミリーマートに
宅配便を出しに行った帰り、
マルタカのマスターに
呼び止められました。
The master of Marutaka
stopped me when I went
to the convenience store
yesterday afternoon.
「ちょっと話を
聞いてあげて。」

カウンターに座っていらした
白髪の男性が、
The gentleman sitting at
the counter said
「英語教えてぇ」
Teach me English please.
「英語話せるようになりたい。
どうしたらいい？」
How can I speak English?
72歳のこの男性は
どうしても英語が
話せるようになりたい
そうです。
This 72 years old gentleman
seemed desperately to
learn how to speak English.
しばらくの間、
私自身の経験を交え、
英語の話で盛り上がりました。
We spent some time talking
about how to learn English
based on my experience.
「お生まれはどちらですか？」
Where were you born?
「ここや。高野山や。」
Here. Koyasan.
高野山で生まれたというだけで
あこがれの存在です。
It’s just so cool to me that
anyone is born and raised
in Koyasan.
彼は胸の前で
両手を合わせ、
He put his hands together
and said
「お大師様、
ありがとうございます！
......って幼稚園入った時から
やってたわ。」
“ Odaishi-sama,
Thank you”
I started doing this
when I entered a kindergarten.
「遊び場は中門やったな。」
The Chumon was my
playground.
「よく野球した。」
I used to play baseball
there.
「中門は埋もれた柱しか
なかったから、それを
ベースにしとった。」
There were only pillars
under the ground, so
we used them as baseball
base.
中門は1843年の焼失から、
高野山開創1200年の2015年まで
172年も再建されませんでした。
The Chumon was burned in
1843 and never rebuilt until
2015 when Koyasan celebrated
its 1200th anniversary.
「大塔もいつでも入れたから、
中を走り回ってた。」
We could freely entered in
Daito, so we were running
all over there.
「大門も昔は上に登れた！」
We used to go up to
the second floor of Daimon.
「えっ！」
What?
マスターと同時
驚嘆の叫びを
あげました。
The master and I
screamed at the
same time.
「パチンコ屋もあった。」
There used be Pachinko
gambling parlors, too.
「どこにですか？」
Where was it?
「梅干屋のとこや。」
Salted pickled plum shop.
「映画館もあった。」
There was a movie theatre, too.
「映画館！！！」
ほぼ絶叫です。
A movie theatre?
We screamed again.
「場所は.....
金剛三昧院の近くやな。」
It was near Kongosanmai-in
「せやけど......」
「どうしたら
英語はなせるようになんのぉ？」
Tell me how I can speak English.
愛してやまない、
偉大なる高野山で
生まれ育ったという
この男性が
キラキラ眩しく
見える私を尻目に、
The fact that he was born
and raised in my beloved
Koyasan made him
look like shining, but
「ええなぁ、英語話せて。
なぁ、どうしたら
話せるようになる？」
