行きました。
It’s been two years
since I visited Reihokan
museum last time.
新型コロナウイルスの
感染が再び広まり出し、
The coronavirus has
stared to spread again,
and
来週は三連休で
観光客も増えるので、
it will be three days weekend
next week, so
その前に、
如来様に会わなければと
思いました。
I wanted see the buddhas
before it becomes busy.
体調のせいにして、
この1カ月ほど
大学院の勉強を
していないのに、
I have’t studied over
a month because of
my health problems,
but
こういう時だけ
学生証の提示は忘れず、
入場料は無料と
なりました。
I never forgot to show them
my student ID so that the
admission fee was free.
霊宝館の一番の楽しみは、
I looked forward to
最初のドアを開けると
お大師様がお迎えくださる
ことです。
seeing Kukai greeting me
as soon as I open the
first door.

私がこのお大師様に
初めてお会いしたのは
ハワイでした。
It was Hawaii where I first
met this Kobo Daishi.
2002年ハワイ真言宗100周年に
霊宝館から数々の国宝や重宝が
海を渡りハワイに来ました。
In 2002, so many National
Treasures and Important
Cultural Properties from
Reihokan have flown to Hawaii
for Shingon Mission Hawaii
Centennial Celebration.
当時ハワイ大学生でした私が
聞いた、
I was a student at University
of Hawaii and heard that
霊宝館長が、
お大師様の肩をたたき、
Director of Reihokan patted
Odaishi-sama on his shoulder
and said
「さあ、お大師さん、
ハワイへ行くよ！」
Odaishi-san,
Let’s go to Hawaii!
とおっしゃったという話を
今でも忘れられません。
I can never forget
that story.
険しい表情の弘法大師が
多い中で、このお大師様、
“萬日大師”は温和な表情を
されています。
Among the many examples
of solemn Kobo Daishi,
this statue displays a
relatively moderate
expression.
また、通常は正面を向く
大師像と異なり、
顔を斜め左に向けています。
Differing from the usual images
that are presented in frontal
poses, his head faces at
diagonal to the left.
『高野山総分方風土記』に
よりますと、
According to Comprehensive
Gazetteer of Mount Koya,
千手院の僧が一万日の
精進をして大師像を
刻んでいるおりに、
when a priest from Senju-in,
who solicited funds for
10,000 days in order to
have a statue of Kobo
Daishi carved,
夢の中に首を左に向けて
振り返る姿の大師像が
現れたそうです。
he had a dream in which
the Daishi appeared with
his head inclined down
to the left.
このお大師様のように、
斜めを向いていたり、
I tend to fall in love with
the statue with the head
inclined down like this
Kobo Daishi, or
片膝を曲げていたり、
the one who bends
one of his legs, or
肩肘ついている
rest his elbows on.
物憂げで他を寄せ付けない
光彩を放つ仏像に惹かれます。
I like the buddhas or
boddhisattva who look
melancholy but shed lustre.
如意輪観音坐像
なんとお美しい。
How beautiful she is.
自分にないものに
憧れるものでございます。
People tend to admire
something they never have.
