弘法大師空海の詩文を
編纂した『性霊集』の
巻第一に、
Sho-ryo-shu is the compilation
of Kukai’s literary works, and
its vol. 1 shows that
空海が都を離れ、
山中に入り、
Kukai left the capital city,
came to Koyasan, and
大自然とともに
生きようとする姿が
みえます。
lived with the nature.
空海の友が
高野山に籠る空海に
手紙を送ります。
One of his friends sent
a letter to Kukai who
confined himself in
Koyasan.
「なぜあなたは
真言密教という宝を
もちながら、それを活用せず、
辺鄙で不便な高野山に籠り、
人々の嘲りを受けているの
ですか？」
You founded Shingon Esoteric
Buddhism, but why you don’t
utilize it and confine yourself
in Koyasan where is so
isolated and inconvenient.
「都の生活は素晴らしく、
楽しいものですよ。」
The life in the city is so wonderful
and enjoyable.
それに対し、
空海が返信します。
Kukai replied.
「高野山の自然の風光は美しく、
いくら見ても飽きることが
ありません。
The nature of Koyasan is
so beautiful, and I never get
tired of it.
また山の清流は涼やかで、
愛しさばかりが募ってきます。」
Also, a clear stream from
the mountain is so refreshing
that I can’t stop loving it.
「春には春の花々が、
秋には菊をはじめ秋の花々が
咲いて私の心をなぐさめて
くれますし、
The various flowers in spring
and autumn would comfort me,
and
あけがたの月、
朝の風はまことに
気持ちよく、
私のこころを
洗ってくれるのです。」
The moon at dawn and
the wind in the morning
are soothing my heart.
「浮ついた華やかな名声や
利益の毒に慢ってはいけません。」
We shouldn’t be conceited
just because we have the fame
and wealth.
抖擻（とそう）して
早く入れ 法身の里
「俗世を捨てて、
大日如来の世界に
飛び込みなさい。」
Leave from the secular world
and let it be in the world of
Mahavairocana.
ワイキキでがむしゃらに
働いていた頃の私にとり、
Back then I was working
so hard in a bustling Waikiki,
and
この最後の二つ言葉は
衝撃でした。
these last two sentences
were eye-opening.
今、高野山で
梅雨の雨音を聞きながら、
While listening to the
sound of the rain in Koyasan,
空海の言葉に共鳴できることに
このうえない喜びを感じます。
I feel an unparalleled happiness
that I could resonate what Kukai
meant about Koyasan.
