Don give up. My middle daughter is 9 and she wholesale new era caps just about as as you can get. She loves dresses, pink, princesses, etc, and has probably named something "loveheart sparkle" at one point. She the artist of the family, and since age 3 has told us "I need to draw", not "I want to draw". :) )
She also convinced that cheap furla handbags she going to be the first person on Mars cheap ray bans and loves cheap ray bans science. Since she decided this, cheap snapback hats her science grades have actually improved somewhat (they were pretty good to begin with, she just realized it for her to be good at it, and is actually required if she wants to be an astronaut).
You can be girly and imagination driven but still love and understand science. Just find a way cheap ray bans to get her interested in it. I started mine with the science behind colors (starting with pink her favorite and from there to visible light, to the entire electromagnetic spectrum), actually.
It may be slightly easier with boys or tomboys (or any who prefer dinosaurs and space) to get kids hooked on science, but all kids are scientists at heart.
But the problem is bigger than just a handful of family members. If you ever go into the nike nfl jersyes china toy stores they clearly have "boy sections" and "girl sections." The sections have their respective boy/girl playing with the toy on the box. You also see re enforcement of what I call "gender colouring" all around you: TV, toys, video games, etc. Pink is for girls and blue is for boys!
I will say that I do think that some children prefer technical toys to other children, and while for some upbringing plays a role for others they just innately aren interested in it. This has nothing to do with genders, I just wanted to add that some children (girl OR boy) just aren into things like Lego, blocks, chemistry, etc. They prefer "social" toys.
Abstract: Psychologists have repeatedly shown that a single statistical factor often called "general intelligence" emerges from the correlations among people's performance on a wide variety of cognitive tasks. But no one has systematically examined whether a similar kind of "collective intelligence" exists for groups of people. In two studies with 699 people, working in groups of two to five, we find converging evidence of a general collective intelligence factor that explains a group's performance on a wide variety of tasks. This "c factor" is not strongly correlated with the average or maximum individual intelligence of group members but is correlated with the average social sensitivity of group members, the equality in distribution of conversational turn taking, and the proportion of females in the group. [emphasis added]
Engineering I believe is about problem solving, and economically interesting problems are usually of a scale that one cheap michael kors outlet individual cannot solve, so it is also about collective problem solving. Apart form simply throwing away the intellectual capacity of half the species, not having good gender balance in engineering also misses an opportunity to enhance the performance of the half that left.
Maybe you should send a copy of this paper to your Dean.
My best friend is an attractive, very smart, very driven girl. She works her ass off, and is currently going to school to be an engineer of some science y sort. While I don know if physics is less attractive than engineering, I do know that she is the only girl in the class, and she gets shit ALL THE TIME.
The boys in her class make fun of her. They are mean as fuck. If she has a question, they laugh at her, and say it because she a girl. They are constantly pointing out to her, that there is a reason she is the only girl in the class.
She said there were originally three other girls in the class. They all dropped out due to the pressure, attention and bullying of being girls in a predominantly male class, and they boys just keep fucking with her, telling her she should have left when they did.
And I think she would have, if she weren so driven to be smarter than all of the men she knows. She developed a huge complex. And now will not date boys who have been to college, or may be smarter than her.
And on a separate, but 10,000x more annoying note, there are assholes who I know are in her classes, that bitch about being single.
YOU ARE SINGLE BECAUSE YOU ARE ASSHOLES, AND HAVE NO SOCIAL SKILLS.
I don know if that is what other girls have experience, but I know she had a really rough time with the whole thing.
