WHAT IS BIOLOGICAL SAFETY CABINET (BIOSAFETY CABINET)?

The Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) is an engineering control designed to protect laboratory workers, the laboratory environment, and work materials from exposure to infectious or biohazardous aerosols and splashes. These aerosols and splashes can be generated when handling materials containing infectious agents, such as primary cultures, stocks, and diagnostic samples.

 

TYPE OF BIOSAFETY CABINET:

There are three types of biological safety cabinets, Classes I, II and III. Provide personal, environmental and product protection. The most basic Class I safety cabin, on the other hand, offers protection only to personnel and the environment. When used properly, biosafety cabinets have been shown to be highly effective in reducing laboratory-acquired infections and cross-contamination of cultures.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF CLASS II BIOLOGICAL SAFETY CABINET (BSC):

The biosafety cabinet must be periodically certified for its efficiency. Various field tests are performed to verify airflows, HEPA filter integrity, containment of contaminated cabinet air, etc. The Class II Biological Safety Cabin is an open-front & a partially enclosed workspace offering protection for the sample, user and environment with HEPA / ULPA-filter (99.97% efficient at 0.3 micron particles). A Class II Biological Safety Cabin (BSC) is a ventilated cabinet that provides protection for personnel, the product and the environment. It is commonly found in clinical and research laboratories working with infectious agents in Risk Groups 2, 3, and 4 (if positive pressure suits are used) or with tissue culture.

 

There are four types (A1, A2, B1 and B2) of Class II BSCs. The main differences between the types are the proportion of air expelled from the BSC to the air that is recirculated inside the BSC and the type of exhaust system present.

 

About 90% of all installed biosafety cabinets are type A2 cabinets. There is a limited need for Class II Type B biological safety cabinets. In addition, Class II Type B biological safety cabinets require very specific installation and operating conditions to function properly.

 

The operating mechanism of the Class II biological safety cabinet differs according to its types. It has an open front with internal airflow for personal protection, HEPA filtered laminar airflow down over the work surface for product protection and HEPA filtered exhaust air for environmental protection. Ambient air and recirculated air are HEPA filtered before flowing down over the work area. Class II BSCs can be discharged into the containment zone or directly into the external atmosphere via a rigid duct connection, depending on types. The amount of air that recirculates or escapes depends on the types.
