PUNE: As many as 70 CCTV(such as sony-fcb) cameras, installed at 52 locations across the city, will soon start recording traffic violations, including jumping of signals and overspeeding, and offenders will be asked to pay fine for breaking rules.
Two-wheeler riders will have to pay Rs 200, while four-wheeler drivers will have to cough up Rs 500 for the violations.
The proposal to activate the Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) to check violations on city roads was approved by the general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation on Thursday. The system is expected to become operational in about four months.
The ITS was introduced in the city in 2009, but the PMC had failed to appoint an agency or contractor to manage the system. As per the PMC proposal, a third party will now manage the ITS with the help of the traffic police and the PMC. The central control and monitoring station for the system will be located at Swargate.
The CCTV cameras will capture the vehicles' licence plate number and the same will be keyed in to the system's database. The traffic police and the private agency will, then, send challans to vehicle owners based on the images captured through the ITS cameras. Two-wheelers will have to pay Rs 200, while four-wheelers will have to cough up Rs 500 as fine for violations.
CCTVs to monitor students' behaviour
The facility has been launched 29 days after a clash broke out between two groups of students belonging to different religions. In the incident, some students also damaged the windows of the college building.
CCTV cameras such as Sony camera series, will keep a hawk-eye on the nook and corner of the three-building blocks of the college spread over 6.9 acres of land. As many as 841 students are pursuing various courses here, including BA, BCom, BSW and MCom.
Xavier D'Souza, principal of the college, said: "The cameras will help keep a tab on the students, as there are only nine permanent teaching faculties and there is no compound wall for the campus." The principal claimed that it is the first Government First College in Dakshina Kannada district to have CCTV cameras.
The cameras have been installed at a cost of Rs 1.73 lakh with the funds granted by the University Grants Commission.
