story=On the morning of September 11, 2001, Fernando and his family in Mexico watch the news in horror as the Twin Towers collapse. His father, Balthazar, is an undocumented busboy on the top floor in the Windows on the World restaurant. Three weeks pass, and there is no word from Balthazar. No telephone calls, money orders, or hope that he is alive. As the family grieves, feeling the emotional and financial toll of their absent patriarch, Fernando's distraught mother swears she sees her husband on news footage - escaping from the building ALIVE. Heroic Fernando decides to take the epic journey from Mexico to New York City to find his father and save his family. Along the way, he finds love and befriends an eclectic group of international characters that help him restore his faith in humanity, as Fernando discovers the hard truths about his father, the melting pot of America, and the immigrant experience.

U can tell that guy had a huge heart and perfect soul. I hope he didn't suffer at all.
I got dizzy when he zoomed in on the restaurant. Just thinking of how so many of the victims of 9/11 had to have felt the same anxiety when they had to hang out of the windows to breathe, it's gut wrenching and heart breaking.
Windows on the World, despite the fact that it takes place in the weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, is a film that is urgently for our time. It is a hero's journey of a son trying to find his father in that grief-stricken landscape and the characters stand in for the millions of immigrants, legal and illegal, who contribute in their everyday lives, to the American landscape. The film seeks to counter the narrative that's all-too-prevalent in today's political and media landscape by telling a story set in America's biggest and most diverse city, at its darkest time. The script by playwright and novelist Robert Mailer Anderson (who also produced the film) is wise and completely engaging; he creates indelible characters who are ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Edward James Olmos gives what he considers to be the performance of a lifetime, and the rest of the cast is terrific as well-with a special shout-out to Glynn Turman. The direction, by Olmos's son Michael, is sure-handed, getting terrific performances from his cast, including his father, in this father-son story, and it's beautifully lensed. The music, including jazz and a title track written by Anderson, is pitch-perfect, supporting the story without getting in the way. This film should be seen by everybody-and I'm sure it will be in mainstream distribution soon, as this is a time when, although the major studios may have turned their backs on substance, terrific indie films like this one have many other possible venues. If you can't see it at a film festival, like I did, keep a keen eye out for it. Terrific and inspiring.

There are real environmental problems and if they're not addressed, the Earth will shake us off like fleas on a dogs back. Ocean deoxygenation is a much larger threat than global climate change / warming.

Windows on the World war ein Turmrestaurant samt zugehöriger Bar im Nordturm des World Trade Center in New York. Die Bar wurde auch mit dem Slogan The Greatest Bar on Earth beworben. Der Gastronomiebetrieb erstreckte sich über die Stockwerke 106 und 107. Während im 106. Stock Veranstaltungsräume in verschiedenen Größen vorhanden waren, fand der normale Restaurant- und Barbetrieb im 107. Stock statt. Das Restaurant war auf der Nordseite untergebracht und erlaubte dem Gast, während des Essens auf die Skyline von Manhattan hinunterzuschauen. Das Restaurant war zwar bei weitem nicht eines der teuersten in New York, aber dennoch gehoben mit entsprechenden Preisen. Für Männer bestand Jackett-Pflicht, die konsequent eingehalten wurde – auch wer reserviert hatte, aber ohne Jackett erschien, wurde an die Bar verwiesen.
Die Bar erstreckte sich entlang der Fensterfront an der Südseite des World Trade Center 1 sowie über das Eck über einen Teil der Ostseite. Die Bar richtete sich zwar eher an das gehobene Publikum, hatte allerdings durchschnittliche Preise und keinerlei „Gesichtskontrollen“ beim Einlass. Am beliebtesten war stets der Mittwoch zur Happy Hour bei freiem Eintritt.
Von der Bar aus konnte man über die raumhohen Fenster einen Ausblick über die Südspitze Manhattans, wo der Hudson- und East River zusammenfließen, genießen. Zudem hatte man einen Blick auf die Freiheitsstatue, den Liberty State Park mit Ellis Island und Staten Island mit der Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
Am 11. September 2001 waren bereits einige Gäste in den Räumen von Windows on the World, da dort auch morgens gerne Räume von Firmen, die im World Trade Center residierten, für Besprechungen, Präsentationen und dergleichen angemietet wurden. Niemand, der sich zum Zeitpunkt des Anschlages in diesen Räumen aufhielt, hat überlebt. Es gibt jedoch Aufzeichnungen zahlreicher Telefongespräche von dort eingeschlossenen Menschen, die ein Zeugnis der persönlichen Tragödien, die durch den Anschlag erzeugt wurden, darstellen.

Am 12. September 2005 eröffnete das Restaurant Colors der ehemaligen Mitarbeiter des Windows on the World. Dabei geht es um die Sicherung von Arbeitsplätzen der Überlebenden und um die Unterstützung für die Angehörigen der Toten.

Visiting the world's first known map, etched into the rocks of a remote alpine hillside 3, 000 years ago, Brotton explores how each culture develops its own unique, often surprising way of mapping. As Henry VIII's stunning maps of the British coastline from a bird's-eye view show, they were also used to exert control over the world.
During the Enlightenment, the great French Cassini dynasty pioneered the western quest to map the world with greater scientific accuracy, leading also to the British Ordnance Survey. But these new scientific methods were challenged by cultures with alternative ways of mapping, such as in a Polynesian navigator's map which has no use for north, south and east.
As scientifically accurate map-making became a powerful tool of European expansion, the British carved the state of Iraq out of the Middle East. When the British drew up Iraq's boundaries, they had devastating consequences for the nomadic tribes of Mesopotamia.

Only played at movie festivals at this time (unfortunately) Windows on the World is a great movie that will appeal to many of us. It is well written, new in perspective and very moving.
Along with Burning, it is the best movie that I have watched so far this year.
I don't find it hard to believe i find unbelievable that people still don't acknowledge that fossil fuels are warming our planet at an alarming rate,i presume this is what you are trying to imply.

Windows on the World, which sat atop the World Trade Center's north tower, is celebrated in a new book, "The Most Spectacular Restaurant in the World, " by Tom Roston.

On an icebound night in February 1993, I trekked with a few hundred other New York Post employees — copy kids, writers and top editors — to a party none would soon forget.
Our host was Steven Hoffenberg, a tax fraudster who briefly controlled the newspaper before he was sentenced to a long prison term. The venue was Windows on the World — technically the 106th floor, the banquet level that was one story below the main dining room.
The black night pressed hard against the windows. I felt the room wobble, as the towers did in high winds. We drank ourselves silly. No one could stomach Hoffenberg, the cash-strapped Post’s short-lived “savior. ” But he laid on unlimited food and booze, and we all had a ball.
You won’t find that notorious party in Tom Roston’s splendid new Abrams Press book, “ The Most Spectacular Restaurant in the World: The Twin Towers, Windows on the World, and the Rebirth of New York. ” But no single account could scratch the surface of all the life and drama that Windows on the World bore during its mere 25 years.
The city’s premier celebration venue, deeply woven into its social, culinary and business fabrics, deserved a proper history. Roston delivers it with power, detail, humor and heartbreak to spare.
Hoffenberg had good reason to choose Windows to try and persuade Post employees that he was really a good guy. No competitor could match its capacity to awe and thrill. Not even the older Rainbow Room and certainly not tourist-trap Tavern on the Green.
Although not a regular, I experienced Windows at its best and worst. For every marvelous meal, there was a mediocre or disastrous one. Two weeks after Hoffenberg’s bacchanal, we were invited by a publicist to a more normal dinner. We never got there: The date was Feb. 26, 1993 — when terrorists first struck the Twin Towers with a bomb planted in the basement that killed six people and traumatized thousands more. Like most New Yorkers, I wouldn’t get to see Windows again until it reopened three years later with an all-new look.
Many famous local restaurants — The Four Seasons, Balthazar — have been subjects of whole books. But strangely, there’s previously been none entirely devoted to Windows on the World, a noble but tragic enterprise so huge that it comprised five distinct venues on two floors.

Roston brings it to life with a novelist’s skill — as on the eerie night when patrons and staff watched alarmed as the blackout of July 1977 plunged one chunk of the city after another into darkness. His telling of the hours before the planes struck on 9/11 gave me chills even though I’d read about them so many times before.
Port Authority honcho Guy Tozzoli, who drove development of the original World Trade Center, fought with Twin Towers architect Minoru Yamasaki over the fact that Windows’ vertical windows were painfully narrow. Tozzoli got Yamasaki to widen them by a half-foot each on the 107th floor before the place opened. But the architect insisted on symmetry, so the PA also had to widen the corresponding windows on the south tower where there was no restaurant, only offices.
The kitchen was the scene of innumerable crazy moments. One chef, Marc Murphy, cut a hole in a wall so he could have “cold Heinekens delivered to him expeditiously and surreptitiously. ” On stressful nights, cooks threw curried kumquats at each other “at high speed” to break the tension.
Windows somehow survived a turbulent procession of internal power struggles as well as changes in ownership, management, critical reputation and culinary direction to emerge in 2000 as the world’s highest-grossing restaurant ($38. 8 million). It was a stirring revival following years when, as wine director Kevin Zraly put it, “The place sucked. ”
The names of Joe Baum, the restaurant genius who created Windows, and star chef Michael Lomonaco — who rescued its flagging kitchen in the late ’90s and escaped death on 9/11 thanks to an errand — are familiar to millions. Fewer knew of Alan Lewis, Baum’s explosive floor boss who “walked the 107th floor like an agitated shark, ” terrified the staff and once threw a spoonful of soup at chef André René when he didn’t like the way it tasted.
But there’s more than colorful anecdotes. Roston frames Windows’ history in the context of urban decline and renewal. He relates its up-and-down fortunes to those of the city — the decay of the mid-1970s, the Wall Street boom and bust of the 1980s, the murder and AIDS plagues of the early 1990s and the Giuliani-era revival.
In this telling, Windows comes to symbolize New York City’s singular capacity to regenerate itself with every turn of the cycle.
What a pity that the new World Trade Center has nothing to compare with it — only a small, top-floor dining room with bad food and precious little view.
But for those who missed it, Roston’s book is a wide-open window on the glory of what was.

Windows On the World was a happy place, and the Twin Towers were happy buildings. The bad part of the story (9/11) says to America we can not let our guard down, we can not let the terrorists harm us or take our things. Recently there was an article in the NY Post about our efforts to re-build the Windows On the World brand see center space/ and the reporter left out some key information.
RIP to all the victims makes me angry what happened to them and their families the world got turned upside down forever that day never forgot and never will.

Please don't forget to mention that Climate change is not just a financial-scam gravy train - it's the trojan horse for a planned unelected dictatorial global government to end democracy. The sales pitch of it's powerful proponents is: in order to (pretendedly) save the planet, democracv must be circumvented because the public cannot be trusted to know what's best for them (us. The power-seekers needed a scare story vehicle to achieve this goal; hence the alarmist carbon scam was acknowledged to have been planned decades ago, whereupon they set about spinning, and often fabricating, the evidence. The central intent of inventing a carbonic-bogeyman-scapegoat is to suppress the prosperity bestowed by fossil fuels (the cheapest fuel) because prosperity empowers and liberates a population. They want to undermine/ topple the strength of the more prosperous countries; and thwart-and-control the economic progress of the Third world. whilst simultaneously transferring vast wealth to the United Nations - an organisation where it is estimated that for every dollar going into the U.N., only 1 cent emerges out to benefit those in need. Thus, the U.N. (and particularly it's anti-scientific, avidly-political climate panel, the IPCC) is eamarked as the core element of the intended one-world un-elected government. The U.N. is already well on it's way to achieving this role thanks pertly to the ACTUALLY-FAILED Copenhagen intergovernmental climate Treaty - WHICH FAILURE they largely ignored and went ahead with anyway by implementing the establishment of nearly 700 new bureaucracies worldwide that are chiefly designed to transfer taxpayers money - AND POWER (via regulation) toward the U.N. i.e. away from national governments. The mainstream media are, as always, almost entirely silent on these matters - both then and since. The current estimated total cost of fleecing taxpayers worldwide via the U.N.-led climate scam is 1.5 Trillion (1,500 Billion) per annum. The same climate extremists are currently seeking to increase that figure to 10 Trillion per annum over the next 10 years i.e. 100 Trillion over the decade, to tackle that which is clearly demonstrably a non-problem.
