An ancient poet sang, "If there were no cherry blossoms at all in the world, our minds would be much calmer and more peaceful in spring." That is really true. Nowadays I am pretty busy writing papers, preparing lectures, and working on the first proofs for a new book, but I cannot help sparing some time for going out to view cherry blossoms, thinking that this may be the last season I can do this.
There is another poem by another poet, which goes, "Because they fall, cherry blossoms are dear to us; whatever in this fleeting world is ever lasting?" Yes, that is true, too.
在原業平の歌に「世の中に たえて桜のなかりせば 春の心は のどけからまし」というのがあります。まことにその通りです。私は最近、論文を書いたり、講義の準備をしたり、新しい本の校正をしたりで、結構忙しいのですが、桜だけは見逃せません。ひょっとしたら桜を見るのはこれが最後かも知れませんから。
伊勢物語に、上の歌を受けて、別の人が「散ればこそ いとど桜はめでたけれ 浮き世になにか ひさしかるべき」と読みました。それもその通りです。
