I have just completed my first year of Master course in Embryology last month. Now I am facing an issue on difficulties to continue in my research work due to lack of funding in medical research.

News on cuts in fund for medical research in Australia have been sounded since my master application was submitted last year. Several rallies against the cuts in fund have been held this year. Yet on 30th of June 2011, Australian Stem Cell Centre, one of the biggest research institutions in Melbourne was forced to close down many of its current operations due to the stress from funding cutbacks. This should have never happened nor the rallies should never be necessary. This is a sad disaster to both scientist and patient community. Medical research is one of the most important aspects of our world today. There is never a reason to cut down any of the research. Medical research works its way to save life. For many years, scientists have been taking into account incurable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, HIV/AIDS, genetic disorders, infectious diseases and one of the most despair diagnosis to most people, cancer. Cutting the fund in the other word means to refuse to cure these diseases.

I was in one of the rallies this year in Melbourne where loads of volunteers with banners lining in front of the State Library. There were guest speakers giving poignant but powerful speeches on the role of scientific research and scientists fits in society. One of the comments come as conclusion at the end of the day was this: "There is no cure for some current diseases. But there is hope. And hope gives us courage. Don’t let them take this hope away from us."
This is stunning and really reminds us all that medical research is for people.

Medical research saves life. Cutting funding is the same as murder.
