Proceeds goes to a charity of your choice and just imagine 1 million people from 25 different cities in the world will be joining you on that date. So why not see how you stand amongst a world of runners? Hope I will be able to see some of you in the local course!

Global Sustainability into the 21st Century
Just as another ice shelf crack occurs in the Arctic (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2008/07/30/eaice130.xml), the world continues to remain in a state of needless goal setting and discussion towards global carbon reduction. A vision to have a 50 percent reduction towards global carbon emission is nice, but unless there is a concrete strategy to getting there, the promise to global sustainability will remain quite empty.
While the first world sees reduction to carbon emission as a threat to their economy, an opportunity can be taken in advancement towards ecological technologies. Just as the western superpowers dominated the world through technological advancement during the industrial and information age, technologies can be a practical solution to achieve a balance between ecological sustainability and economical stability. Give up on financial gimmick such as emission rights trading, and empty political promises. How much are we leveraging on the future of our children for the wealth of a minor group of people today?
And technological advancement does not always mean solar panel with a hundred percent efficiency. Better urban planning that concentrate the population into mega cities instead of spreading them in suburban area help reduce travel-related carbon emission and lots of extended commutes. Making single use products that can be re-manufactured easily without complex, expensive and environmentally harmful processes will make mother nature smile and your next restaurant take-out experience less sinful. Instead of expensive hybrid cars, regulate the size of vehicles so that the engine sizes and therefore carbon emissions are reduced. Do you really need all the room and power of a Hummer to work everyday? Accommodating the smaller vehicles with dedicated lines and roads will hopefully relieve people's worry that smaller car equates to an unsafe car. When the vehicle on the next lane is a Nissan March instead of a Hummer, you will feel much safer in a Honda Fit.

M-Shaped Society
M-Shaped Society
Finally have some time to read Omae Kenichi's "M-Shaped Society", a book about how the Japanese society is shifting from one based on the middle class being the majority towards a bipolar one with majority being the lower class and a few being very wealthy. Rather than a trend that occurs in the Japanese society, I think that the social redistribution will be inevitable for other nations to follow. It's almost like returning to the prehistoric or medieval times, with people being either master or slave, except this time power is determined by money. More interestingly, I think my generation will determine what status our descendants will take. The social division will be much too great for the next generations to attempt change. The global economy will continue to grow, however the people living in the lower middle class will no longer benefit in the same way that the post-war generation did. And higher education by itself will not be enough to improve living standard either.
While reversing the trend seems impossible, we should ensure that the current political system marked by inefficiency, short-sightedness and bureaucracy be changed to one that truly serves everyone in the society, such that those in the lower middle class of the future will still be able to maintain the post-war living standard at the very least and have their basic rights be protected.
