The opening detector is an indispensable part of a home alarm system. Composed of two distinct elements, it effectively protects a home against intrusions and burglaries.

What is an opening detector?

The opening detector is defined as a device designed to detect the opening of an access point to a dwelling. It can be used on all openings of the house to protect, including doors, windows, gates and even a roof window. This device is also an essential accessory to a home alarm system, because it easily detects intrusion where it is installed in order to ensure optimal protection of the home against burglaries. Also known as an anti-intrusion detector, the opening detector is also a deterrent device par excellence, because once the intrusion is detected, an alarm siren sounds. This situation automatically leads burglars not to pursue their objectives and not to enter the house further.

The operation of an opening detector

An opening detector consists of two distinct parts: a fixed part and a moving part. Placed on the fixed part of the door or window, the fixed part of the detector houses a flexible blade switch which is also known as a reed or contact relay. The mobile part with an integrated magnet is placed on the door or window sash to be secured. These two elements of the intrusion detector will be connected by a magnetic radio transmitter and receiver system that provides a signal in case of intrusion. When the door or window to be secured is in the closed position, the two detector elements come into contact under the effect of the magnet. On the other hand, when the two elements are separated at a distance of more than 5 millimeters, i.e. in the event of opening, the detector instantly signals the intrusion alarm unit, in order to activate the alarm system of the house. For the device to function correctly, it is therefore necessary to ensure that the detector is correctly activated. A poorly closed door or window may prevent normal operation of the device.

Some tips for installing the opening detector

The installation of an opening detector must be carried out in a very meticulous way so that the device ensures correctly its role of intrusion detection. The first step is to ensure that the two detector components are aligned when the access point is in the closed position. It must also be ensured that the spacing between these two elements does not exceed 5 mm. In order not to interfere with normal use of the opening, it is advisable to install the intrusion detector well away from the hinges of the sashes. It is also best installed on a surface that is resistant to moisture and impact. As it is a security device, it is also strongly recommended to install it indoors, more precisely at a location difficult to locate from the outside. Also, do not forget to check the indicator wireless lighting that confirms that the device is working properly.
