I'm going to say it immediately; Doctor Sleep is one of the best films I've seen this year and maybe the best.

The star of this show is writer, director and Editor Mike Flanagan. The screenplay was really good. Since I've read the book I will go over this part now: unlike many adaptations, this one gets the spirit of Stephen King's writing: horror, terror, gore, emotions, and humanity. There are many changes, the main one is following Kubrick's adaptation which largely diverges from the novel (The Shining) hence changing many locations and events from Doctor Sleep. Personally, I wasn't annoyed by that change. And there are other ones that I won't talk about except for one which did piss me off but from a certain angle is poetic. Flanagan borrowed many elements from The Shining novel which was a nice nod for book lovers. Doctor Sleep's plot is very different from The Shining's yet it heavily relies on elements established in the 1980 classic - Doctor Sleep is best enjoyed after viewing The Shining. The plot follows Danny Torrance, now grown up, into his life post-The Shining as a young girl, Abra Stone, discovers the True Knot, a band of immortal beings who feed on kids with The Shine. It is a different plot and a whole different story which I personally loved and found refreshing. The film's runtime is 2 hours and 31 minutes, and it can be really felt. The film is long and slow paced but does it bore? No! I was completely sucked into the film after the first act which was slightly trippy.

When it comes to the characters, Dan Torrance has a great arc. He was portrayed by Ewan McGregor which did a good job. Kyliegh Curran was the star of the show. She did a very accurate performance of Abra from the book and her overall acting was solid and she did truly Shine. Rebecca Ferguson as Rose The Hat was terrifying. Carl Lumbly wasn't good enough as Dick Hallorann nor Roger Dale Floyd as Young Danny. However, Alexandra Essoe did accurately capture Shelley Duvall's performance as Wendy Torrance. And Emily Alyn Lind as Snakebite Andi was a pleasure to be seen on screen. The remaining cast members did a great job.

The production design was fascinating. The recreation of The Overlook Hotel was (creepily) nostalgic. The cinematography was captivating. The Visual Effects were really well-done. The score by The Newton Brothers was breathtaking and really put Wendy Carlos' score for The Shining into great use which gave the film a deep and scary atmosphere.

Mike Flanagan fascinatingly directed the film. The shots he took, the angles he chose and the scene were mesmerizing. There were many scenes from the book that can be deemed hard to film, yet he executed them in a clear way. In fact, the atmosphere he created resembled Kubrick's. Even though he replicated Kubrick in many places (editing and directing) he still did make the film his own: very different, unique and stunning. There were many jump scares but they were the same type that Kubrick used in The Shining. He even replicated scenes from The Shining with different characters, which was a delight. In addition, the scenes recreated from The Shining were also well-done and I hoped there was more. Mike Flanagan also edited the film. The editing had nods to the 1980 classic, and was masterfully done. We have a true horror film that knows how to scare and deeply disturb.

As a horror film, it is scary. It rarely relies on jump-scares and the scary parts are in the unfolding events, music, and directing. What surprised me most and I loved, was emotion. This film almost made me cry at a few points and it doesn't feel empty. It is fueled by feelings and emotions.

Doctor Sleep really honors Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and adds humanity to it. It pays The Shining homage and continues the story. The sequel was unnecessary, yes. But was it bad? Absolutely not. I am glad it did not interfere with the mystery left in The Shining's ending and avoided explaining it.

In the end, this may be the longest review I've ever written, but that's because I loved Doctor Sleep. It was everything I hoped it would be. At a few scenes I was close to crying, others i was smiling because of references to The Shining.

I read The Shining when I was a kid, 11 years old. I'm 60-ish now and have been terrified of the shower lady all this time. Our shower curtain stays open. Well, when she made an appearance I just about lost my mind!! But now that I'm grown, I wasn't frightened, but nostalgic. This movie was so great I watched it twice in a row and loved every minute. By the way, I tried to read the book when it first came out but the first couple chapters scared me so much I returned it to the library and saved myself another 50 years of terror, LoL!! Enjoy!!

My expectations were low, considering that this movie is derived from a horror classic. To my surprise, I found this movie consistently engaging and entertaining. The new character, Abra, didn't feel contrived (the actress did a wonderful job portraying her); and I very much so appreciated the fact that the writers ventured far away from the typical weak(cuz she doesn't know her own power)-magical-girl-who-needs-protection trope. In fact there were several moments in which the movie deviated from genre-typical low hanging fruit, and I found this truly refreshing.

Doctor Sleep will PUT YOU TO SLEEP. I can’t believe this movie is getting as many positive reviews as it is. I remember going to the theater and seeing the preview for this movie and thinking it didn’t look very good. But a friend of mine posted a picture of a dvd of this movie in his FB feed and I asked him to tell me how it was. He said it was a “must watch” and that’s why it’s in his collection. The only way this movie is a must watch is if you need something to bore you into slumber. Literally. Ewan McGregor’s good looks are the only good thing about this flick and I can get that kind of a thirst fix from other films if I really want it. Save your money!

Doctor Sleep is the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s classic The Shinning. Like that film this one was based off of a Stephen King book. The story revolves around Danny (Ewan McGregor) the child from the Shinning confronting a group of evil psychics. The story focuses upon a trio of characters. First, there’s Danny who is a mess. He’s been on the run since the events in the Shinning. He befriends a young girl named Abra (Kyliegh Curran) who is another psychic with the Shine. Then there’s the True Knot, a group of psychics that feed off the souls of other psychics. They are hunting Abra and Danny has to help her. The True Knot got more than they were asking for however. The movie proves to be up and down. The start which focuses upon Danny when he was young in the Shinning and then his problems into adult is very strong. It has a good mood with a thumping heartbeat behind many of the scenes. Then things get a little mixed in the middle when the other characters are introduced. It picks back up later on, but never captures that same feeling. The Black Girl Magic aspect of the film was a nice addition to the Shining lore however.
And then watch this movie. It will spoil what small pleasure you will get from this rather ordinary horror movie which repeats far more of The Shining than the book does. The movie takes a lovely tale of personal redemption and connection and turns it into... meh. It's watchable, a harmless waste of time if you're bored, but the adaptation could have been stronger by keeping the redemption and rebirth theme of the book. The book has much to do with family lost and family found. The movie? It just loses family. I read the book last week. I found it solid King with a breath of his own life woven into it. I found the movie solid Sordidwood, banking more on the success of The Shining and copying it far too much. It loses the story of Danny and his life after the events of The Shining and also loses the point that redemption, forgiveness of self, is possible and leads to a better life. The movie? That would be a spoiler alert. One thing I like about the movie is how Abra is a more active heroine in the film. She is a stronger child than young Danny and it comes out in the film more than in the book. I thought that played very well. I wish they had not lost the blood relationship between Abra and Dan, particularly as they cast away from the book's character of Abra's physicality. IMO, keeping that would have made the relationship between Dan and Abra stronger.

I totally recommend this movie. It is about power real and imagined, pure and good, vs immoral and sick. The characters are great and the acting is great. The director is able to really capture much of the terror of the Shining and the menacing evil it tried to crush Danny Torrance and his family with when he was little. As an adult he has been using all kinds of things to shrink and hide his gift. Things that have hurt him and made him sad and untrusting as well as not trustworthy. Because of certain factors from his childhood he was given a way to quiet the monsters in his head. But even still the damage was so great he lost his way, but because of the trust he receives and care he receives he is able to be happy one again. He's given a chance to pay back the gifts he was given. And fights like hell, dusting off his shine and helping to protect others from the evil. The movie has a cool plot throwing in things that remind me of the things people report seeing during sleep paralysis and their hunger for fear and pain. Sufficiently rounded characters, neat plot, some cool effects and fights. I can pretty much say, that if you enjoy the horror of Steven King's books, you will enjoy this movie.
