Dale CarnegieのHow to win friends and Influence people の中で、伝説のマジシャンHoward Thurston (1869 – 1936) へのインタビュー記事の一節を紹介しましょう：
I asked Mr. Thurston to tell me the secret of his success. His schooling certainly had nothing to do with it, for he ran away as a boy, became a hobo[=drifter], rode in boxcars [=railroad freight cars], slept in haystacks, begged his food from door to door, and learned to read by looking out of boxcars at signs along the railway. He told me every time he entered the stage he said to himself: “I am grateful [=thankful] because these people come to see me. They make it possible for me to make my living in a very agreeable [=pleasant] way. I’m going to give them the best I possibly can.” 私はサーストン氏に成功の秘訣を尋ねた。学歴はまったく関係なかった。彼は少年時代に家出をし、浮浪児となり、貨車に乗り、干し草の山で眠り、一軒一軒食べ物を乞い、貨車から見える線路沿いの標識を見て文字を覚えた。彼は私にステージに上がるたびに、次のように自分に言い聞かせたと言った。： 「この人たちが私を見に来てくれるからありがたい。この人たちのおかげで、私はとても楽しく生活することができる。ベストを尽くして最高の演技を見せるのだ」
Carnegie は上の挿話に対して、Ridiculous? Absurd? と読者に問いかけ、次のように結んでいる。I am merely passing it on to you without comment as a recipe [=method] used by one of the most famous musicians of all time. 私は、史上最も有名なミュージシャンの一人の秘訣を、どう思うかは皆さんにお任せし、お伝えしているだけです。
