Mountains are slowly destroyed by erosion /ɪˈroʊʒənイロージョン/（侵食） and weathering /ˈweðərɪŋ/ウェザリング（風化）. Mountains influence climate （気候）, rivers （河川）, and ecosystems /ˈiːkoʊˌsɪstəmz/イーコウシステムズ（生態系）.
The Himalayas /ˌhɪməˈleɪəz/ ヒマレイアズ（ヒマラヤ山脈） were formed by the collision /kəˈlɪʒən/ コリジョン（衝突） of the Indian Plate（インドプレート） and the Eurasian Plate /jʊˈreɪʒən pleɪt/ ユレイジアン・プレート（ユーラシアプレート）.
Volcanic mountains form when magma /ˈmæɡmə/ マグマ（地下の溶岩） rises from the mantle /ˈmæntl/ マントル（地殻の下の層） and erupts （噴出する） at the surface.
This eruption is called a volcanic eruption /vɑːlˈkænɪk ɪˈrʌpʃən/ ヴォルカニック・イラプション（火山噴火）. Mount Fuji is a volcanic mountain.
Mountains are slowly worn down by erosion /ɪˈroʊʒən/ イロージョン（侵食）.
The breakdown （崩壊）of rock is called weathering /ˈwɛðərɪŋ/ ウェザリング（風化）.
Glaciers /ˈɡleɪʃərz/ グレイシャーズ（氷河） can carve（刻む） deep valleys（凹地・くぼち） through a process called glacial erosion /ˈɡleɪʃəl ɪˈroʊʒən/ （氷河侵食）.
Rivers also transport sediment /ˈsɛdəmənt/ セディメント（堆積物） from mountains to lower areas.
The height of a mountain above sea level is called elevation /ˌɛləˈveɪʃən/ エレヴェイション（標高）.
The highest mountain above sea level is Mount Everest.
Temperature decreases with altitude（高度） by roughly 0.6 degrees Celsius per 100 meters.100 メートル上るとほぼ0.6度C下がる。
