Brawl ends forgettable season for ABQ High

The schools involved in Friday brawl at Milne Stadium hadn made any major headway as of Tuesday as both look to mete out punishment for a fight that prematurely ended a game between Albuquerque and Rio Grande.

Coaches and administrators on both campuses met Tuesday with those involved in the brawl, which occurred in the second quarter with the Ravens leading the Bulldogs 13 0.

Those meetings are expected to continue at least for another day.

is up to the schools to (handle) discipline, APS spokeswoman Johanna King said.

Albuquerque Public Schools issued a brief statement Tuesday afternoon.

investigation into the incident at the Rio Grande/Albuquerque High football game last Friday is continuing. School administrators at the respective schools are currently handling consequences for students involved. At this time, up to a dozen students are facing discipline. APS administrators and school police are working with school administrators to determine if any coaches should face consequences. AHS parent texted the Journal on Friday night from Milne Stadium, site of the game, and said a Rio Grande coach struck one of the Bulldog players during the melee.

King, however, said in an interview that there are no criminal charges pending against any coach or player.

The Journal was unable to reach James Jackson, the referee who ruled Friday game a double forfeit, for comment.

Dana Pappas, commissioner of officials for the New Mexico Activities Association, said they would not make Jackson available.

After the fight, Danner was talking with AHS coach Tim Garro when Jackson gave them his decision that the game would end in a double forfeit.

just yelled at us: Game over, according to Danner.

NMAA associate director Dusty Young said he could not discuss whether the officials report singles out individual players for misconduct.

Although Danner gave a brief interview to the Journal on Friday night, both he and Garro have been instructed not to comment further on the particulars of the fight.

Garro, however, posted this on a Facebook page after the brawl:

game of the year called in second quarter due to a riot on the field. My back is sore. was not immediately clear whether the reference to his back was related to the fight.

Things escalated after a hard Rio Grande tackle near the AHS sideline on Bulldogs quarterback Ryley Padilla. The Bulldogs immediately went after the Ravens tackler and that when the fight began.

It is not known exactly how many players were involved; Danner said on Friday night that it was only the players from his defense, along with players from AHS offense and along the Bulldogs bench, that fought.

The archived video from ProView Networks, which broadcasts APS games on its website, cuts Greg Robinson Jersey off immediately after the hit on Padilla.

During the live broadcast, the camera pans away from the fight after about five seconds.

Albuquerque High on Halloween broke New Mexico state record for consecutive losses at 38. That losing streak is now at 39.

In early October, nearly half of all the football players at Rio Grande 28 were deemed academically ineligible for the remainder of the season.

The next week, a Ravens game against West Mesa was stopped by officials with about 2 minutes still left on the clock because of unusually chippy and aggressive play between the two schools.
