Publisher: Farrar

So far this summer I have read: The Nuclear Family Vacation; The Nevada Test Site, A Guide to the America's Proving Ground; and The Curve of Binding Energy. The final binding energy included the protein-ligand atomic pair-wise interactions, which were described by a distance-dependent function (Equation). I just finished reading John MacPhee's The Curve of Binding Energy, which is about nuclear weapon designer and Orion inventor Ted Taylor. The binding energy per nucleon, the energy required to remove one neutron or proton from a nucleus, is a function of the mass number A. The BW formula is unable to represent the binding energies of even Z and even N. Oranges, Encounters with the Archdruid, and The Curve of Binding Energy (the latter two nominated for National Book Awards) are my three favorites of his 24 books that I've read. I don't know how to post pictures, but if you google images the nuclear binding energy curve you will see what I am on about. The curves are averaged from three separate experiments. The following graph shows the Bethe-Weizsäcker curve (in blue), compared with the experimental data (in red) for the N = Z nuclei. Life has kind of gone nuclear for me. As a function of internuclear separation , the electronic-energy components are related by and . The Curve of Binding Energy, John McPhee's 30-year-old exploration of the security risks of home-built nuclear weapons, was a most pleasant read.
