Preparations are in the making for the 57th annual Anne Arundel County Fair scheduled for Sept. 16 to 20 at the fairgrounds at 150 Generals Highway in Crownsville.

In addition to the tons of food, fun and festivities, there will be dozens of contests and talent shows for public participation. While some contests hold registration one the day of the event registration, others require advanced registration.

The following is a partial list of contest in which people may participate during this year's county fair week.

County residents may enter their children who will be between the ages of 1 to 4 by Sept. 15 for the Cute Kid Contest. Entries must be post marked by Aug. 31 and received by Sept. 4. There is a $5 entry fee per child and a limit of 25 children per age group. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded to each age group. Parents must submit a registration form found on the fair's Web site or in the fair catalog.

The deadline for the Fair Queen Contest is Aug. 31. There is a nonrefundable entry fee of $10. Contestants must Brand Jeans be county citizens for at least one year and between the ages of 16 and 20. Other stipulations require applicants to have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and that they are single, never married and have no children.

Scholarship prizes will include $500 for the queen, $300 for the first runner-up and $200 for the second runner-up. Applications can be downloaded from the Web site.

Registration to participate in the Arundel Idol contest must be received by Sept. 7. Participants must submit an application found on the Web site. Contestants must be amateur performers ages 16 and older with acts suitable for all ages without the use of profanity, substance use or explicit material or body language.

There is a grand prize of $500 and second prize of $200.

Registration for an Antique Tractor Pull will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 18. There is a $10 registration fee per entry hook to sled. Trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Ribbons will be given to all participants.

Tractor categories will include historic stock 1940 and older, antique stock and open 1954 and older and antique stock and open 1955 to 1965.

Baker's beware of the Cake Auction contest held at 4 p.m. Sept. 20. Participants will check their cakes in by noon followed by judging at 1 p.m. and the auction at 4 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the 4-H Foundation.

Cakes must be on a firm, disposable plate with a cover and must not require refrigeration. Each cake entry must include the recipe and will become the property of Anne Arundel County 4-H Foundation. Box mixes may be used only if the recipe is altered.

First place will be awarded $15, second place $10 and third place $5. The entry categories will include cakes and decorated cakes for both youth to up to age 17, adults ages 18 and older.

Judging for the Catalog Cover Contest will be held prior to the opening of the fair. Entries will be accepted at Sept. 13 and 14. Participants must present original work on 7 by 10 inch paper that has never been published or copyrighted. There must be space to fill in fair dates, fair title and the work must be mounted on stiff 8 by 11 backing.
