Have you heard of one of the worst tragedies which took place in Rwanda, a landlocked country in East Africa in 1994?

Genocide.

It's said that about one million Tutsis people and a number of moderate Hutus people were killed by an extremist group of Hutus in 100 days. A million lives were taken in 100 days.

Last night I watched ”Hotel Rwanda” for the first time. I had been feeling like it's one of the movies I would have to watch, but I was so afraid of facing the real story that I had kept avoiding watching it until recently. The movie itself was about Mr. Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel owner who protected 1,268 Tutsis and Hutus refugees at the hotel he was running during genocides.

Insanity and brutality observed from the sequence of massacres are beyond my imagination. I could not believe. I would rather say I would never want to believe. However, it's a true story no one can deny. International society may praise Rwanda for its remarkable recovery from genocides, but I bet the history left the people wounds which are persistent physically and mentally.

Not only Rwanda, but also many other nations witnessed genocides at a certain point of history. It's also happening now, at this moment. For instance, Central Republic of Africa is reportedly at the risk of genocide now. Even cannibalism has been observed there. I'm just speechless feeling helpless without coming up with anything I can do.

Attached is a link to the website of ”The hotel Rwanda Rusesabagina Foundation” founded by Mr. Rusesabagina expecting to reveal the truths of the Rwandan genocide and achieve the prevention of future genocides. I'm hoping to learn a lot from it.
