BMX Pro Kyle Bennett to Race 2008 Olympics
I futzed up my start because it's only my second ever lap around a BMX course. I'm not going fast enough to land the jumps, anyway. As I struggle over the rollers and around the banked turns of the track, most of my energy is focused on not crashing. The fourth person in our starting heat took off at a dead sprint and is now flying down the home nike free cheap sale straight far away from me, his rainbow striped jersey flapping in the humid air.
It's a gruesomely muggy Tuesday night in Conroe, Texas, a railroad town turned Houston exurb that feels, frankly, many miles from anywhere. Dark thunderclouds loom in the south, and the air is heavy and wet, primed to explode into rain. This is race night at Armadillo Downs BMX, a patch of red dirt scraped out of the piney woods, right between a swampy looking lake and the I 45 freeway. About three dozen riders are rolling through their practice laps, everyone from six year old boys to teenage girls with braces to even a handful of 30 ish and 40 ish dad types, looking a bit heavier and a lot more scared than the young 'uns, but not ready to give it up yet, not ready to spend their Tuesday and Thursday evenings sitting in lawn chairs sipping Pepsi Cola with the other parents, going soft.
Pretty much everyone but me is making it look easy, popping out of the start gate and hitting at least the smaller jumps confidently of course, it really is pretty easy if you've been doing it since you were seven years old, when you came here with your grandfather, and you basically grew up here at the track, doing something that came so naturally that you went on to win multiple national titles at it, just beating everyone with ease, and then doing the same thing at world championships, bringing home one, air max uk two, and then three rainbow jerseys, while earning enough coin to leave the trailer where you grew up and buy the sweet two story suburban house, all solid brick, where those jerseys now hang in their frames on the wall.
Better still to win that third world title in time to establish yourself as the favorite for the gold medal in the first ever BMX race at the Olympic Games, an event whose importance will probably transcend the sport of BMX or even cycling, and that even has the potential to change the nature of the Games themselves. It all looks pretty easy, in other words, if your name is Kyle Bennett.
When the start gate drops in Beijing on August 20th, the eight riders who survived the qualifying rounds will plunge down a starting ramp about 25 feet high, about the same as dropping off a third floor balcony. They'll hit the bottom at close to 40 mph, then rocket off a double jump and into Olympic history.
