「12月31日、イランは16歳の時に犯した犯罪に対して死刑判決を受けたモハンマド・ハッサン・レザイー死刑囚に対し、刑を執行した。

欧州連合（EU）はこの死刑執行を最も強い言葉で非難し、18歳未満の者が犯した犯罪に対し極刑を言い渡すことは、『市民的、政治的権利に関する国際規約』と『子どもの権利に関する条約』の下での国際的義務に反することを再度思い起こす。

原則として、EUはいかなる状況においても極刑に反対しており、その普遍的な廃止を目指している。死刑は犯罪に対する抑止力はなく、人間としての尊厳と品位に対する受け入れがたい否定である。EUはイランに対し、将来の死刑執行を控え、極刑廃止に対して一貫した政策を追求するよう求める」

Statements by the Spokesperson

On 31 December, Mohammad Hassan Rezaiee was executed in Iran, after being sentenced to death for a crime committed when he was 16 years old.

The European Union condemns this execution in the strongest terms and recalls yet again that the death sentences for crimes committed by persons below the age of eighteen are contrary to international obligations under the International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As a matter of principle, the EU is opposed to capital punishment under any circumstances and aims at its universal abolition. Death penalty fails to act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity. The EU calls on Iran to refrain from any future execution and to pursue a consistent policy towards the abolition of capital punishment.
