Duracell International Inc. and the Intel Corporation have announced standards for a battery with a chip that tells portable computers, cellular phones, camcorders and similar devices exactly how much charge it has left.
Computers will be able to use the information to cut power use when needed, according to Duracell. The chip keeps track of 34 parameters, including how long the battery has been sitting unused, how often it has been charged and discharged and how high a temperature it has experienced. The chip also reports when a cell within the battery is getting weak.
Some computers, including I.B.M. Norman Allen, senior vice president for new products and technology at Duracell. The announcement this week is of an "open" standard that Duracell and Intel hope many companies will adopt for different kinds of devices. The two companies are also hoping to cut down on the profusion of battery sizes to make life easier for retailers, customers and battery makers.
Mr. Allen said Duracell's chip design was proprietary; what is being standardized are the information that is reported back to the device in which the battery is used and the way it is reported,
With information from the battery's chip, Mr. Allen said, a camcorder or a laptop computer could display a clock that would tell the user the number of minutes for which the device could be kept running. He compared this to a "trip" computer in a car, which can tell how many miles worth of fuel are left in the gas tank, based on the amount the tank holds, the distance traveled since the tank was last filled and the rate of consumption.
Duracell plans to introduce batteries using the new standard in November at Comdex, the computer industry trade show in Las Vegas, Nev., and to begin shipping the batteries in the first half of 1995. Duracell would not discuss the price of the new batteries.
