Portrait paintings or portraits depict the actual face of an individual, animal or object, or collection thereof. Historically, a portrait painting typically depicts a person or animal, and is usually accompanied by text, usually in block-style composition. The typical subject of a portrait, however, is no longer necessarily tied to a role, as in the case of today's portraits. Today, artists are able to work from either a photo or of a computer-generated image, so individuals do not need to "stand" still for a portrait painting.Custom Wall Decor

Paintings, on the other hand, typically portray events or people from a historical or cultural perspective. Paintings were created to illustrate events that took place in time or in space. Paintings could also represent abstract notions or concepts and have been used for that purpose since the Renaissance, at least. From a historical perspective, the concept of an artist being a painter or a portrait painter dates back to the renaissance, when artists would commission paintings from other artists in order to complete murals or masterpieces for their palaces, churches, and other buildings. The concept of paint being used to apply paint to a surface dates back to ancient times, with early Egyptian paintings found inscribed on temples.custom painting

However, the modern concept of an artist painting portraits of people who have passed away has become much different than what it once was. In many cases, an artist will select a subject, sit them in the studio, and then use their own unique style and techniques to create a painting that is based around that person's character, lifestyle, hobbies, beliefs, or preferences, and which captures the essence of that person as they were, as they lived it, or as they would have lived it. When it comes to sitters for a portrait painting, the artist has the ability to choose anyone from anyplace in the world and paint a masterpiece which is likely to touch the heart and soul of whoever will be portrayed.
