Hello Readers,
Last Sunday, after months of preparation, we held our annual speech contest. It was the first time for Roseanne and I to attend. I was really surprised and impressed by the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. Tomoko and Misato were both ill in the run up to Sunday but still worked very hard in preparation. I think it went really well and all the students should be proud of their efforts.
Saturday we had a rehearsal with the 10th rank and kindergarten classes for their song and dance performance. They did really well and managed to concentrate for an hour even though there were about 30 students there, much more than usual. The very young students, aged around 3, were allowed to leave after about 40 minutes because it's tough to practice for that long so young but some of them asked to stay and continue the rehearsal. I was really surprised and touched.
Sunday, the day of the speech itself, started with a short set up time at La Hall before everyone arrived. Four of our Junior High School students and High School students kindly volunteered to help. With everything ready we started on time. I was involved with the videos. I've never made a film before so it was fun to try. I don't like hearing my voice being broadcast loudly so it was a little embarrasing for me to watch. Still, I hope the introduction videos came across OK.
It was nice to see Paula and Galit back as judges along with two visiting teachers from the Kanagawa school. I also met Mr Hiroyama for the first time and enjoyed hearing his speech. The first group of speeches went very quickly. I thought everyone did a great job even though they were nervous. Then, the musical performance came. All the students looked really cute in their Halloween costumes. The students didn't sing as loud as in the rehearsal but remember the dance moves well. By the end of both songs they were singing louder and louder. They did a great job performing on a stage at such a young age.
The final two groups performed. We heard lots of really interesting speeches on many different topics. After deliberations the judges made their decisions and the winners, runners up and special prizes were announced. I'm sure they had a difficult time because many people spoke well. Speaking in public is an important skill to learn and get comfortable at. I'm glad the students got a chance to do that through their studies here at Pioneer Language School.
To the winners, enjoy your trips to Tokyo Dinseyland. Congratulations to everyone else too. You all did really well.

数ヶ月の準備期間を経て、先日の日曜日にパイオニアのスピーチコンテストを開催しました。
ロザンナと私にとってははじめての経験でした。
私は参加した皆さんの頑張りにとても驚き、感動しました
。
出場した生徒の皆さんは、これまでの努力に誇りをもつべきです。よいスピーチでした
。
コンテストの前日には、１０級アクティビティに参加する生徒達のリハーサルを行いました。
彼らはそのリハーサルでとてもよく頑張りました。普段の授業は４０分なのに、
リハーサルでは１時間、なんとか集中してできました。彼らのがんばりに、私は感動をしました
。
日曜日のスピーチコンテスト当日。私達は短い時間で準備をしなければいけませんでした。
４人の中高生がボランティアで手伝ってくれました。
そして、時間通りにコンテストをスタートすることができました。
私はビデオ作成を担当しました
。今までにビデオ作成をしたことがなかったので、とても面白かったです。
でも私は自分の声がどうしても好きになれません。
作った映画の中に入っている自分の声を聞くのが心地よくないのです。
しかし、映画は大丈夫なできであったと願います。
ポーラやガリートに会えたこともよかったです。彼らは、今年は審査員としてスピーチに参加してくれました。
そして横浜校からは、広山理事長と２人の講師もきました。
最初の８－９級の部のスピーチは、あっという間に終わりました。
生徒達は緊張していましたが、とてもいいスピーチでした。
そして１０級アクティビティ。参加者全員がかわいいハロウィン
のコスチュームを着ていました。
生徒達は、リハーサルほどは歌っていませんでしたが、踊りは上出来だったと思います。
彼らの年齢を考えれば、素晴らしいパフォーマンスでした
。
後半の部では、作文が様々で内容が面白いスピーチがたくさんありました。
最後に入賞者の発表がありました。審査員は入賞者を決めるのが難しかったことと思います。どれも素晴らしいスピーチでしたから。
人前で話す力はとても大事なスキルだと思います。パイオニアで英語を学ぶ中で、このような機会を生徒達がもてるのは喜ばしいことです。
各部で優勝した生徒の皆さん、ディズニーランド楽しんできてくださいね
。
