L'Amour est plus grand que tout.
Quand
je parlerais les langues des hommes et des anges, si je n'ai pas
l'Amour, je suis un airain qui résonne, ou une cymbale qui retentit.
Et quand j'aurais le don de prophétie, la science de tous les mystères, et toute la connaissance, si je n'ai pas l'Amour, je ne suis rien.
Et quand je distribuerais mes biens pour la nourriture des pauvres, quand je livrerais même mon corps aux flammes, si je n'ai pas l'Amour, cela ne me sert a rien.
L'Amour est patient, plein de bonté; l'Amour n'est pas envieux, l'Amour ne se vante point, il ne s'enfle point d'orgueil; il ne fait rien de malhonnête, il ne cherche point son intérêt, il ne s'irrite point, il ne tient pas compte du mal; il ne prend pas plaisir à l'injustice, mais se réjouit de la vérité; il excuse tout, il croit tout, il espère tout, il supporte tout.
L'Amour ne périt jamais. Les prophéties seront abolies, les langues cesseront, la connaissance sera abolie et cessera. Car nous ne connaissons qu'en partie, et nous ne prophétisons qu'en partie. Mais quand ce qui est parfait sera venu, ce qui est partiel sera aboli.
Lorsque j'étais enfant, je parlais comme un enfant, je pensais comme un enfant, je raisonnais comme un enfant; lorsque je suis devenu homme, j'ai fait disparaitre ce qui était de l'enfant. Aujourd'hui nous voyons au moyen d'un miroir, d'une manière obscure, mais alors nous verrons face à face.
Aujourd'hui je connais en partie, mais alors je connaîtrai comme j'ai été connu.
Maintenant donc, ces trois choses demeurent: la Foi, l'Espérance, l'Amour.
Mais, la plus grande de ces trois choses, c'est l'Amour !
If I talk with the tongues of men and of angels, but if I do not have Love, then I am only like the sound of a big horn or a loud bell.
If I speak words from God, if I can understand all secrets, and know everything, but if I do not have Love, I am nothing, even though I can do all of these things.
If I give away all I have, and if I give my body to be burned, but if I do not love people, I get nothing out of it.
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous. Love is not proud and does not boast.
Love does not do things that are not nice. Love does not just think of itself. Love does not get angry. Love holds no wrong feelings in the heart.
Love is not glad when people do wrong things. But it is always glad when they do right.
Love forgives everything. Love is always trusting, and always hoping, and never gives up.
Love never ends. The gift of speaking words from God will end. The gift of speaking in different tongues or languages will stop. The gift of knowing many things will end.
Now we know only a little, and we can speak only a little of God's words.
But when everything becomes perfect, that part will come to an end.
When I was a child, I talked like a child. I understood like a child. I thought like a child. But when I became a man, I stopped doing things like a child.
Now it is like looking in a looking-glass which does not make things clear. We cannot see and understand things plainly. But when things become perfect, then we shall fully know and understand everything, just as God knows.
These three things will remain for ever. They are Faith, Hope, and Love.
But the greatest of them, is Love !
1 た とひ我もろもろの國人の言および御使の言を語るとも、愛なくば鳴る鐘や響く鐃の如し。

假令われ預言する能力あり、又すべての奧義と凡ての知識とに達し、また山を移すほどの大なる信仰ありとも、愛なくば數ふるに足らず。
3 たとひ我わが財産をことごとく施し、又わが體を燒かるる爲に付すとも、愛なくば我に益なし。

愛は寛容にして慈悲あり。愛は妬まず、愛は誇らず、驕らず、
5 非禮を行はず、己の利を求めず、憤ほらず、人の惡を念はず、

不義を喜ばずして、眞理の喜ぶところを喜び、
7 凡そ事忍び、おほよそ事信じ、おほよそ事望み、おほよそ事耐ふるなり。
8 愛は長久までも絶ゆることなし。然れど預言は廢れ、異言は止み、知識もまた廢らん。
9 それ我らの知るところ全からず、我らの預言も全からず。
10 全き者の來らん時は全からぬもの廢らん。

われ童子の時は語ることも童子のごとく、思ふことも童子の如く、論ずる事も童子の如くなりしが、人と成りては童子のことを棄てたり。
12
今われらは鏡をもて見るごとく見るところ朧なり。然れど、かの時には顏を對せて相見ん。今わが知るところ全からず、然れど、かの時には我が知られたる如く
全く知るべし。
13 げに信仰と希望と愛と此の三つの者は限りなく存らん、而して其のうち最も大なるは愛なり。
