New Year, and more specifically New Year’s Eve, is a very important day to celebrate in Mexico. It is a time to gather with family and friends and enjoy a good meal together. In Mexico, we welcome the New Year by eating dishes that we would not normally eat in our daily lives. We eat traditional Mexican dishes such as romeritos, bacalao, and pozole, as well as some more international ones like turkey, lasagna, and spaghetti. Besides these delicious main dishes, it is also common to enjoy desserts like apple salad, flan, or arroz con leche.

One of the traditions that I personally enjoy the most during this time of the year is hitting a big piñata and running to get as many candies as I can. Piñatas are big balls made out of newspaper and glue that contain many candies inside, so kids usually hit them with a stick or bat until they break and all the candy spreads on the ground. Although piñatas are not specific to New Year’s Eve and are more often used at children’s birthday parties, they are still very popular on this day.

Another great way to enjoy time with friends is to light fireworks together. As in many other countries, it is very common in Mexico to set off fireworks, both sparklers and explosive ones.

Finally, the best way to end New Year’s Eve is by eating grapes. During the last 12 seconds of the year, we follow a tradition that comes from Spain. It consists of eating one grape each second and making a wish or thinking of a resolution for the coming year as we eat them. In this way, we welcome the New Year with positive thoughts.
