V.G.A. has another advantage over earlier standards: The space in which a character is displayed on screen - actually a block of tiny dots - is just a bit bigger than in other standards. That allows each character to appear clearly in all its glory and makes life ever so much nicer for word processing. Computers are notorious for squeezing the descending tails of commas and the letters g, y, p, j and q into a little square; with V.G.A. the tails do not have to be scrunched up or tucked under.
The most noticeable thing about V.G.A., however, is the wide range of colors that can be placed on screen at once (for those who have a color V.G.A. monitor, of course). Mr. McManus notes that V.G.A. can display up to 256 colors out of a palette of more than 262,000 colors and shades (if that seems an improbable number, bear in mind that the computer can easily make subtle shifts in shading by altering individual pixels). At full 640 by 480 resolution, V.G.A. can display 16 colors at once. Unless you're a Picasso, that ought to suffice for most applications. In monochrome mode V.G.A. supports about eight dozen shades of gray.
