Even if you have already done your shopping for the proper replacement windows and you have already signed the services of the best window installer in town, this does not mean that you can now relax. You still need to check if your replacement windows are installed properly. Here is a checklist of the things that you need to examine right after the installation.1. Window is installed square. Measuring the distance of every corner of the windows frame can check this. All the measurements must be the same.2. Window is installed level. Reading the level of the window can check this. Simply ask the installer to place the level in the sill of the window. You can find a small clear tube with two lines drawn on it. You can see a bubble inside the tube and if it sits in between the two lines, it means that the window is installed level.3. Window is installed plumb. Plumb installation means that the window is not leaning in or out but rather straight up or down. This is done similarly as checking the level for you also need to put the level on the interior of the window frame. The bubble should also sit in between the two lines that you can find in the tube.4. Sealant on the exterior is applied evenly. In order to protect your room from being drenched during winter or occasional rain showers, a sealant is needed. You need to check whether all sides of the window have sealant and that they are applied with evenly. This way, the sealant will not crack easily. Check for holes in the caulk and call the attention of the installer if ever there are to address the problem quickly.5. Exterior of window is vacuumed clean of glass. The installers working on your window may sometimes need to break the old window glass. They would pick up the large broken pieces of glasses but you also need to make sure that they vacuum the area near the window clean to avoid accidents of getting pricked by broken glasses. Thus, you need to tell them to vacuum the area clean of broken glasses.6. Window opens and closes properly. If it is supposed to slide up or down, swing from side to side, open from top to bottom or any other functions, you have to test them if your window does exactly what it is supposed to do. You have to test the locks and make sure that your window closes well.7. Window is properly insulated. This can be checked by making sure that there is no more gap between the new replacement windows and the old window frame. The gap can be closed down with a backer rod or a low expansion insulating foam. This way, air will not be able to escape easily.8. Corners are tight and interior trim is tight. The trim is needed to provide a neat finish to the window. Check for gaps or waving along the trim. Your window should not have any gaps at all.9. Walls should have no damage. Check the walls for breaks or cracks. If there are, tell the installers about it so that they can repair the damage before they leave.10. Project debris should be removed from the working site. If cleaning after the installation is not included in the contract, you have to at least tell them to pick up all the project debris in the driveway so that it would be easier for you to throw them away.
