「東方諸教会との謁見」にて

100年以上前、教皇レオ13世は、「東方儀式の保存は、実現されている以上に重要である 」と指摘した。
キリスト教東方、特にディアスポラにおいて、その保護と促進を求める訴えを受け入れよう。

Over a century ago, Pope Leo XIII noted that ' the preservation of the Eastern rites is more important than is realized. '
Let us embrace the appeal to safeguard and promote the Christian East, especially in the diaspora.

キリスト教東方の古く、しかし常に新しい精神性は、癒しの香油をもたらす。
人間の不幸に対する認識と神の慈しみに対する畏敬の念を融合させ、私たちの卑しさが決して絶望を招くことなく、恵みを歓迎するように私たちを導いている。

The ancient, yet ever new spiritualities of the Christian East offer a healing balm.
They merge an awareness of human nisery with awe for divine mercy, so that our lowliness never leads to despair but invites us to welcome grace.

私たちの世界には多くの暴力と戦争がある！
軍事征服の名のもとに人々が死んでいく、憤怒を呼び起こすべきこの惨劇の中で、キリストは繰り返し呼びかける： あなたがたに平和があるように！

There is so much violence and so many wars in our world !
Amid this horrow that should provoke outrage - as people die in the name of military conquest - stands the call of Christ, who repeats: ' Peace be with you ! '

キリストの平和は、争いの後の墓の沈黙や服従の結果でもない。
平和とは、他者を見つめ、その人生を新たにする贈り物なのだ。和解、赦し、そしてページをめくって再出発する勇気であるこの平和のために祈りましょう。

Christ's peace is not the silence of the tomb after a conflict, and it is not the result of subjugation.
Peace is a gift that gazes at others and renews their lives. Let us pray for this peace, which is reconciliation, forgiveness, and courage to turn the page and start again.

聖座は、敵同士が互いの目を見ながら出会い、また人々が値する尊厳を取り戻すことができるように支援することを惜しみません。
心をこめて、各国の指導者たちに申し上げます。
互いに出会い、会話を重ね、協議し合いましょう！

The Holy See is willing to help enemies meet, so they may look each other in the eye and so people may be given back the dignity they deserve: the dignity of peace.
With heart in hand, I say to the leaders of nations: let us meet; let us dialogue; let us negotiate !

戦争は決して避けられないものではありません。
武器は沈黙することができるし、沈黙せざるを得ない。
それは、武器は決して問題を解決するものではなく、問題を激化させるだけだからだ。
平和の種をまく者は、犠牲者を刈り取る者ではなく、歴史を通じて永続する。
他者は憎むべき敵ではなく、語り合うべき人間である。

War is never inevitable.
Weapons can and must fall silent, for they never solve problems but only intensify them.
Those who sow peace will endure throughout history, not those who reap victims.
Others are not enemies to hate but human beings with whom to speak.
