Fox Star Studios Panga Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari Romance Not Rated 2h 11m Jaya, the heroine of “Panga, ” a working mom with a sickly little boy and a smiling husband, cooks, does laundry, shoos her child onto the school bus. She hovers and worries. And is unhappy. Once upon a time, though, Jaya (Kangana Ranaut) was somebody: the captain of India’s women’s kabaddi team. ( The sport, born in India and popular across Asia, is easy enough for the uninitiated to follow onscreen. ) But she quit playing when her husband’s job moved the family to Bhopal from Delhi. Can she make a comeback? That’s the question in this lightly feminist film, which shifts from being a domestic dramedy to an underdog sports tale, a favorite genre of Indian movies. The link is family: Will Jaya’s husband, Prashant (Jassie Gill), and little boy, Adi (Yagya Bhasin), support her return to kabaddi? Even if she has to move away from them to practice with the team? Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, “Panga” has an understated realism — about the tempos of family life and the Indian middle class. The drama, too, is understated: bumps in a road paved with good will rather than a clash of values and goals. Jaya doesn’t have to fight that hard to convince her family that she needs to pursue her sport. Quite the opposite: The idea is her son’s initially. And when she makes the team and decamps to Kolkata, father and son have the occasional gentle crisis — Prashant makes a mess of Adi’s tiger makeup for a school play; his cooking is subpar — but learn to adjust. (One quick fix: Jaya’s mother swoops in to take up cooking duties. ) As a sports story, “Panga” is less heart-pounding than sweet. Jaya has to fight her aging body, her teammates’ idea that she’s too old to play (she’s all of 32) and societal notions about mothers. As expected, the movie ends with a big tournament, an all-Asia competition, and a climactic match: India versus Iran. But Tiwari is better at probing the emotions under the drama than building a nail-biting, rah-rah finish, though she tries. Throughout, Tiwari doesn’t get enough help from her script — she wrote it with Nikhil Mehrotra — which knows the beats to hit but not always how to hit them. The film is fuzzy when you want it to be sharp, its characters too generic to register, particularly Gill’s one-note Prashant. Not so Ranaut’s Jaya, who elevates the movie, putting the story across better than the script can. Ranaut makes Jaya credible and specific; she’s not an every woman or every mom or every athlete. She’s this one, Jaya, and Ranaut makes you care about what kind of place she can find for herself in the world. Panga Not rated. In Hindi, with subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 10 minutes.

Just for everyones info, here is Anupama ‘s review of Dangal which she calls a “Masterpiece” now while when she reviewed it, she felt the movie became clunky in parts, the wrestling becomes repetitive & tiring, the climax twist was unnecessary & unconvincing etc. So the only point she had to criticize in Panga is the prep montages. Which is quite silly for somone who is a director ‘a wife to say this as if there was any other way Ashwiyni could show the transformation of Jays from Housewife to Kabadi Champion.

Rooted in the subculture of societal facts, Panga is an emotional roller coaster tale of a middle-class Indian woman, where a forgotten Kabaddi world champion catalyzes an inner desire to give a new meaning to her existing role as a wife and mother and takes an ingenious decision to come back to the sport despite the challenges of age stereotypes and new generation complexities which creates an upheaval in her life as she is torn between societal pressures of family responsibility and love for the sport.
Jaya Nigam is a former Kabaddi world champion and current railways officer who is married to Prashant Shrivastava, a railways chief engineer, and has a son, Aditya a. k. a. Adi. Currently living in Bhopal after Prashant's transfer to the city, she is propelled both by the arrival of her former teammate Meenu and a push from Adi, who learns of her achievements through Prashant, to return to the sport despite facing challenges of physical fitness and newer, more experienced players. Initially unable to deal with the pressures of a hectic job and the exercise routines that Adi's enthusiasm pushes her through, she finally regains composure and, with support from Prashant and Adi, goes on to mark her comeback to the sport as a mother of a 7-year-old after her story gets noticed again. How she gets back on her feet as the renewed player forms the rest of the story.

Panga was announced on 21 August 2018 with Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari sharing an emotional Instagram video montage of herself, Kangana Ranaut, Jassi Gill, Neena Gupta and their families, indicating that when your kin stands behind you, no one in the world can take ‘panga’ with you. [8] Ranaut told the Mumbai Mirror in an interview: “When Ashwiny narrated the film's story, I was completely moved. My family has been my pillar of strength and have always stood by me through thick and thin. I could really relate to the emotions of the film. Plus, Ashwiny is known for her slice-of-life films and I loved her recent work in Bareilly Ki Barfi. Panga is even more special for me as, for the first time, I will be playing the role of a National-level Kabaddi player. That's going to be challenging for sure! I am looking forward to some exciting times with Ashwiny and the Fox Star team. ” [3]
Gill who is playing the role of the husband of Ranaut in this film told the Mumbai Mirror: “I loved the script, especially the inspiring family angle. The film is a roller-coaster of emotions but to me the real Indian family feeling was the most heart-warming part of the subject. Since I come from a very close-knit family, I could identify with the story. ” [3]

The film went on floor on 23 March 2017 in Panaji. [4] [5] The first schedule of the film was wrapped up on 7 December 2018. [6] The second schedule of the film was wrapped up on 22 June 2019. [7] The director planned next schedule in a Delhi stadium in April. [10] The third schedule of shooting began in April 2019 in Delhi. [11] The Delhi schedule of the film was completed in mid April and next schedule of shooting to begin in Kolkata. [12] The filming was completed in mid July 2019, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, the director of the film wrote on her Instagram account, "My dearest Panga Humans are the sun. The sun that spread a ray of hope when things seem really impossible to achieve. " [13]
