Working out which types and what quantity of packaging materials you are going to need for an entire house move can be a tough decision. Most people only move house every seven years or so, which means it's unlikely that it is a decision you're familiar with.

So how much moving supplies do I need?

  • You are going to need a variety of different sized heavy duty double walled cardboard boxes, along with some protective packaging such as bubble wrap and tissue paper and strong packing tape to secure the boxes shut. You will also need a marker pen to write on the boxes for house moving to say what is inside of them, to keep things organized.

  • The quantity will vary depending on the size of your house and how cluttered your house is. In the removals industry it is generally based on the number of bedrooms in your home; we are able to roughly predict how much packaging you are going to need based on how many bedrooms there are, as it tell us how big a house is and approximately how much stuff you have, on average.

  • We believe that you will need ten large packing boxes for house removal per room of the house. This is an average figure as well, as you will need more boxes for the kitchen and less for the hallway, but if you work out ten boxes per room, this is a good place to start.

  • When it comes to bubble wrap, it is always surprising how much you get through. It is good to protect all the delicates from your home, so don’t be shy and use a lot of it. We recommend buying a one hundred metre roll, as they only cost £21 online and will save you a lot of breakage and troubles!

  • You will probably need six rolls of strong adhesive tape for your entire house move. This will be used to seal up the boxes full of your belongings. Make sure you use the strongest tape available to ensure the packing boxes for moving won’t split open.

  • One pack of tissue paper should be enough. You can buy large acid free tissue paper online in packs of five hundred sheets and that will be more than enough to cover a house move. It will only cost £10.

  • If you start packing two weeks before the completion date, this will give you plenty of time to pack up your things. If you run out of heavy duty boxes for moving or other packaging, you can then order more as you need it, reducing wastage . However, if you leave packing until the last minute, it is better to order more packaging rather than less because you won't have the time to order more.

  • You can buy house moving packs online which are designed to make your job of choosing how much packaging you need easy. You can buy a three bedroom moving pack for example, which contains everything you should need for an average three bedroom house move, at a discounted rate. This is the quick and easy option.
