Metal hydride batteries have the advantage of high output and recharging ability for further use, something not available for normal alkaline batteries. Bob Unger sent in a link to a battery shootout at Imaging Resource that pits different rechargeable batteries against each other to see which provides the most capacity per charge. The batteries were charged and placed on an apparatus which drained them in a fashion similar to continued digi-cam use. The total battery such as Hp EV088AA battery , Hp HSTNN-LB31 battery , HP Pavilion dv2000 battery , HP Pavilion dv2700 battery , HP Pavilion dv6000 battery , HP Pavilion dv6300 battery , HP HSTNN-FB21 battery , HP RW556AA battery , HP EV087AA battery , HP EX942AA battery , HP Pavilion dv9000 battery , HP Pavilion dv9600 battery capacity was determined and then compared.
First, I was rather surprised that the Rayovac battery/charger combination did as well as it did. Besides their being a newcomer to the NiMH world, I'd seen rather disappointing results from other "name brand" batteries, namely the Energizer Accu Rechargeables... Really though, it's a three-way tie for first place, between the Rayovac 1600s, the Maha 1700s, and the GP 1800s, given there was a spread of only 0.2% between the energy capacities I measured for each of them. (See what I mean about manufacturer's mAh ratings not really being relevant?)
Guess which batteries I use for my digi-cam? Yup the Energizers. It was interesting to see the Energizer capacity was actually lower than common alkaline batteries. One thing of note about the results. The Energizer is only rated at 1200 mAh, so it would be expected to be at the bottom of the list, but it only provided 63% percent of the rated capacity. For a few bucks more a set, there are batteries that can last nearly twice as long in your favorite device.
