Foreign diplomats on Tibet visit

Foreign diplomats are in Tibet on a fact-finding visit approved by China, following criticism of Beijing's crackdown on Tibetan protests.

The UK and the US are among the 15 nations invited on the one-day trip to Tibet's capital Lhasa - the first since anti-China riots began two weeks ago.

The US welcomed the move, but said diplomats and observers should be allowed to see areas surrounding Lhasa.

The visit follows a short trip to the city by a group of foreign journalists.

Meanwhile, European Union foreign ministers meeting in Slovenia have rejected a proposed boycott of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing.

European leaders have been among the most vocal in criticising China's reaction to the protests in Tibetan communities.

Tibet's government-in-exile, based in India, says about 140 people were killed in a crackdown by Chinese security forces. Beijing disputes this, saying 19 people were killed by rioters.

Tightly controlled

A group of 17 diplomats from countries including Japan and Australia arrived in Tibet from Beijing on Saturday.

They are expected to return to the Chinese capital later on Saturday.

US state department spokesman Sean McCormack said the trip was a "step in the right direction".

"But it's not a substitute for the ability of our diplomats, as well as others, to travel not only to Lhasa, but into the surrounding area specifically," he said.

The visit follows a short trip by a group of journalists from Chinese and international media.

A 30-strong group of monks in Lhasa staged a noisy protest as the reporters were shown around one of Tibet's holiest sites, the Jokhang Temple, on Thursday.

The monks shouted "Tibet is not free, Tibet is not free".

Associated Press reporter Charles Hutzler said the outburst was the only spontaneous moment in an otherwise tightly controlled trip.

Media curbs

A Tibetan exile group expressed fears for the "welfare and whereabouts" of the monks involved in the outburst, but Chinese officials insisted no action would be taken.

"We will never do anything to them," the vice-governor of Tibet, Baima Chilin, told reporters on the trip.

"We will never detain anyone you met on the streets of Lhasa. I don't think any government would do such a thing."

The reporters described Lhasa as a divided city - with Chinese areas resuming normal business, but the old city, mainly populated by Tibetans, still under a heavy police presence.

The BBC's request to take part in the media trip was turned down.

Western media organisations are still prevented from reporting freely in the area.

Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has once again appealed for China's leaders to engage in "meaningful dialogue" over the issue.

Officials have frequently blamed the Dalai Lama for the protests. He denies encouraging violence.

PROFIL

Il propose ensuite plusieurs maxi-singles en différentes versions, toujours très attractives : Kekkonshiki no uta / Are you ready to ROCK?, Senor Senora Senorita, Dear my friend/Itoshii hito ainsi que Kimi ni negai o.

Believe in power of love.

Believe in fairy tales.

Someday, happiness will be around me.

Quelle est la forme de son visage?

(What's the shape of his face?)

It is so hard to pronounce correctly.

(w_-;

These days I depended on myself by following the website lessons to learn some new French vocabulary.

It is really interesting.

Myu said that it is confusing to learn French with "English" thinking in our mind.

But actually the origins of some vocabulary in both language are quite similar, aren't they?

I guess I do need a regular French study schedule from now on.

Bon courage!!
N'abandonne pas! La réussite est devant toi! (Don't give up! Success is coming soon!)

Film raises questions about Austen and her own Prince Charming

By: Cristine Mayer

Nearly every young woman reads the stories of Jane Austen's romantic, enchanted novels, filled with tales of the women who face betrayal and pride for the chance to love. But as the tagline to the movie Becoming Jane says, perhaps the greatest story of all was that of Jane Austen herself. In the year 1875, 20-year-old Jane - played by Anne Hathaway - finds herself well on her way to becoming the acclaimed author she is today. That is until - much like her character Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice- she finds herself in the presence of a most prideful male stranger. Soon the forces of passion find Jane unable to keep away, and a journey soon begins filled with love and loss and the relevance of wealth in marriage during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Becoming Jane features a diverse cast including Maggie Smith, Julie Walters and James Cromwell. Perhaps the most interesting casting was that of Hathaway as Jane. Hathaway's accent seemed slightly forced, sometimes making it difficult to listen. Otherwise, her interpretation of Austen proved far and beyond what any written knowledge could have given. The film's poetic influence is hardly overpowering and gives a small tug on the coats of artsy romance fans, yet not enough to take away from the true story laid at hand. However, the sheer brilliance of Austen's masterpieces seems slightly overlooked as the love story takes precedence in the film's plot - something that those unbeknownst to the greatness that is Jane Austen should not notice, but any Austen literary admirer will surely find slight disrespectable.

James McAvoy brought true brilliance and fervor to the screen in his portrayal of Austen's own Mr. Darcy. His wary smile and slightly mischievous charm ignite the screen and bring forth an air of sheer magic as the story unfurls.

Becoming Jane retells the classic story of doing what is assumed to be right and doing what is right by love. It gives any Jane Austen fan a new favorite love story and the reason to wish that they too could become Jane.
