A new book by stone Buddha researcher Takeo Oda, The Forgotten Amida: A Study of Hōzō Bosatsu (Amida in Five-Kalpa Contemplation), has been published by Casa Publishing. The volume investigates emaciated images of Hōzō Bosatsu found across Japan and examines their religious significance and place within Shin Buddhist history. The author first became aware of these figures while researching local stone Buddhas in Toyama. Although Hōzō Bosatsu is usually depicted with a full and healthy appearance, many examples in Toyama portray the bodhisattva as drastically emaciated. Hōzō Bosatsu represents Amida Buddha before enlightenment. According to the Pure Land sutras, Hōzō made forty-eight vows for the salvation of all beings and became Amida after long contemplation and practice. Images representing this prolonged contemplation are known as “Five-Kalpa Contemplation Images.” The focus of the book is this unusual emaciated form. Art historical scholarship has generally classified such thin seated figures as images of the fasting Buddha, and studies such as Amida Buddha Images published by the Nara National Museum have rejected their identification as Five-Kalpa Contemplation images. Oda instead focuses on the fact that many communities across Japan have long revered these statues specifically as Hōzō Bosatsu. The survey ranges from Toyama to temples in Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Shimane, Shikoku, Kyushu, and even hidden-nenbutsu communities in northeastern Japan. Through local traditions, sermons, and lay devotional practices, the book traces the spread of Hōzō Bosatsu devotion. Particular attention is given to how devotion to Hōzō Bosatsu spread among ordinary believers through itinerant preaching traditions and local confraternities. While modern Shin Buddhist scholarship has often treated Hōzō as a mythic figure, the author argues that many lay believers regarded him as a concrete and compassionate savior. From a temple and shrine media perspective, the significance of this study lies not only in recovering a neglected iconographic tradition but also in reexamining the devotional world of ordinary believers. These emaciated images may reflect the hopes, suffering, and expectations of people who entrusted themselves to Amida’s salvation. Through stone Buddhas and local temple traditions, the book offers a new perspective on how Shin Buddhism was received and lived by common people.
