〜原因・理由を表す表現その②〜
Dialog
◯それで ローザ、今年度のダイアログについての感想は？

◯どれもなかなか楽しかった。
面白いストーリーのおかげで私たちは色々な役を演じることができたよ。
They were really fun.
Thanks to the interesting stories, we got to play a lot of different roles.
◯海底ピラミッドにあったあの像のことはどう思った？
あれは誰だったのだろうね？
What did you think of that statue in the undersea pyramid?
Who was that?
◯メガネをかけた男性のこと？
明らかに 大西先生ね。
You mean the man with the eyeglasses?
It's obviously Oonishi sensei.
※obviously...明らかに
「もう見ればわかるでしょ？」といったニュアンスの単語。
◯ほぉ、そうすると先生は何千年も前にも生きていたんだね。
So, he was around thousands of years ago.
※be around...
「周りにいる」
それが比喩的に「生きていて」ということを表している。
◯まあ、あれはフィクションだからね。
あの台座に書かれた文字からして大西先生に違いないよ。
Big West Teacherすなわち大西先生と書いてあったんだから。
Well, it is fiction.
Because of the writing at the base it has to be him.
It said, big west teacher or Oonishi sensei.

・has to ...ハストゥ
◯大西先生はゼイトクスのような超天才なのかな？
Ah, Is Oonishi sensei a super genius like a Zeytocs?
◯それは言い過ぎ かも。
I wouldn't go that far.
※go far...成功する・出世する
I wouldn't go that far ...
そこまでは言わない・しない
文法と語彙
◯私たちは色々な役を演じる機会を得ました。
We got to play a lot of different roles.
※この文のget toは
「〜するチャンス ・機会を得る」ということ。
getに特に難しい意味があるわけではない。
getのイメージは 動き。 get toは「どこそこに到着する」ということ。
それが 比喩的に使われて こうした意味となっている。
◯台座の文字からして、それは彼に違いありません。
Because of the writing at the base, it has to be him.
※have toは「〜しなければならない」「〜に違いない」とmustと同様の訳となるが、 mustとは異なり客観性を宿している。
mustが主観的な「〜しなくちゃ駄目」
なのに対して have to は客観的な必要性から「〜しなければならない」。
must が主観的な「〜に違いない」に対して have to には「〜以外には考えられない」と言った緻密な感触がある。
ここでも確たる証拠があり「違いない」と言っている。
Grasp the concept
◯台座の文字からして、それは彼に違いありません。
Because of the writing at the base, it has to be him
because of +名詞の形に慣れておく。
because +節と明確に区別する。
この文でもofの後ろは the writing at the base と名詞となっている。
原因・理由を表す表現には他にも次のようなものがある。
◯面白いストーリーのおかげで、私たちは色々な役を演じる機会を得ました。
Thanks to the interesting stories we got to play a lot of different roles.
Thanks to〜は「〜のおかげで」
原因 理由を表すフレーズ。
◯技術的な問題のため会議は延期されました。
The meeting was postponed due to technical issues.
due to は公的でフォーマルな感触のあるフレーズ 空港のアナウンスなどでもおなじみの表現。
◯それはデータが不完全だったからです。
That's because the data was incomplete.
That's because は状況をThat's で指し、その原因を述べるフレーズ。
◯電車に乗り遅れてしまって、だから遅れたんです。
I missed the train, and that's why I was late.
that's why は、why以下の状況を生み出した理由をthatで指し示す表現。
◯売り上げが上がった理由は、新製品を発売したからです。
The reason why sales increase is that we launched a new product.
理由を述べるにはreason （理由）を直接使うこともできる。
◯リスナーの皆さんのおかげで 私たちはまた素晴らしい1年となりました。
私たちの成功は皆さんのご支援のおかげです。
心の底から感謝いたします。
