Yahoo News asked Americans who are tangibly affected by the Supreme Court's same-sex marriage decisions to react to Wednesday's rulings. Here's one perspective.
COMMENTARY | I am sorely distressed. Our nation has once again fell victim to the wiles of a cagey and determined opposing force. Gradually we are eroding our own hard-fought-for moral foundation and are replacing it with a jumble of individual rules for individual sects and organizations.
I am a 63-year-old wedding officiate, servicing the western Michigan region. I conduct weddings for anyone who chooses to request my services. Wedding officiates fill a void left by religious organizations that refuse to marry those who have been married before, have been divorced, are not Christian or do not believe the same way the religious organization does.
I have very few rules for the couples that request my services: that they pay the requested fee and they are one man and one woman. My second rule may now be threatened. The one hope I still have is that the Supreme Court primarily put the burden of definition back onto the states. Maybe my state could be one of the last to recognize same-sex marriages.
There is little reason to go into an inflated defense of the "one man, one woman" guideline for marriage; some things are simply the way they are because that is what was meant to be! It has been that way since time beginning. That is the way God intended it. God established the first marriage. He gave man (Adam) a helpmate (Eve). He told them to go forth and procreate. God's Garden of Eden example is what our entire civilization is built upon, whether we want to admit it or not.
At any rate, whenever someone does first ask me to marry him or her and his or her same sex partner that will be the last day I offer my services. There will be one more small business that backs out of our floundering economy and one more senior on a fixed income who sacrifices his supplemental income.
Rather than face a myriad of legal tangles because I refused one same sex couple their "due" rights, I will simply shut my door, take down my plaque, so to speak, and say goodbye to Country View Weddings. I will not contribute in any manner to this madness being forced upon us by a minority gone wild.
