The right small one is mine, and it looks very traditional Japanese bento; hinomaru bento.
White rice and the red pickled plum in the middle looks like the flag of Japan.
It works as a natural preservative,
and also, because it is very salty and sour,
you do not need fish or meat to go along with rice.
There were times, I only heard so from my parents, when they were too poor
to prepare other than rice and plum.

Today's Nekoben

rice cooked with seaweed powder (benefit health)
small fish and walnuts, cooked sweet (K does not like pickled plum)
grilled local fish
rolled tuna and egg
boiled spinach
sweet beans
fruit: TV-orange

夫婦弁当です。
夫が梅干を好まないので、私だけ日の丸になりました。
ずっと和のものを食べていなかったので、やっぱりこういうのが食べたくなりました。
