A day in SEO Vietnam
I spent my last Sunday to talk and teach the students ofSponsorship
for Education Opportunity Vietnam (SEO-Vietnam). I
did two parts: one was the a career planning consultant; the other one was a
SEO-Vietnam’s students are the best Vietnamese students from all over the world
and rigorously selected through two rounds of interviews and a round of
application filling. Joining the program was quite a challenge. The acceptance
rate of the program is around 10% to 12%. Teaching these students is such a
great joy because they always ask very smart questions.
The
event was also an opportunity for me to learn from many other guest speakers. I
met Don Phan, ex-CEO of Zalora Vietnam, and now CEO/founder of taembe.com, a
website which sells baby products such as diapers on the internet and Fiachra
Mac Cana, who is the most renowned equity researcher on Vietnam. Here are a few
interesting things to share:
- Both
Don Phan and other panelists agreed that sales related jobs have been the most
meaningful job for us. Don told us a story when he was working for AT&T as
a salesperson on the phone while he was in high school. Americans are not so
kind therefore they would curse him and before he could feel anything, the
computer automatically dialed another customer. Also, another great point he
said was in Accounting and Financial firms, everybody worked, got certified and
until a level, technical skills among people are equally good. Whoever is
promoted to partner is expected to bring in the clients, which is sales.
Failure to bring in new clients results in dismissal of partners in company.
- The
students were overly concerned with making the wrong choice when choosing their
first job. In my opinion, there is no wrong choice. You can learn from your
mistakes but should be quick with your decision making. Work-life has no
definite end-point. A momentary success requires a certain effort to maintain.
- Somehow
some students thought that I was a big party person because I seemed to have a
lot of fun in my life. They also asked how they could balance their life
because they thought more work means less fun. I do not go out to drink a lot
these days. Most of the times it is work-related. However, I learned to love my
work and the little repeated things it has. Hence, work is fun.
- People
seek for motivation to work more. However, some students did not realize that
they already had the enthusiasm in them. They had gone through a very tough
process and woke up early to endure long lectures for 10 hours. I hope they can
carry this spirit into their work and life in the future.
