I'm not saying the k mount was a problem with the camera itself, just why it never found the larger market beyond the second camera status it eventually earned. I *love* my k-01, k mount and all, but the biggest complaints that I heard from people shopping it against other mirrorless cameras all seem to point back to the k mount (well, other than the actual look of the thing). And those were size and lack of other lens mount adaptability.
If you compare it to DSLRs, which is understandable since pentax used so much DSLR tech in the camera, then the camera itself would be a little underwhelming because most mirrorless cameras are lesser specced to begin with. But if Pentax had focused more on the mirrorless aspect, they could have had a major success against the other mirrorless lines. The price was actually pretty comparable to other mirrorless cameras when it was released, and the image quality was better than almost every other mirrorless camera at the time. But it was a major missed opportunity because it offered neither of the advantages that mirrorless shoppers look for. The flange distance of the k mount dictated the size of the body, and it meant that you could only use k and m42 lenses.
I agree that if they had included weather sealing, that would have made a huge difference in sales and been a major jump for mirrorless cameras, since that market didn't get weather sealing until a couple years later with the $2000 olympus em1 (which continues to sell like hotcakes right now).
And I would buy your hypothetical k-02 in a minute. Hell, I'll probably end up buying a k-s1 after the inevitable price drop anyways, because it already seems like the spiritual successor to the k-01. :)
