Drive-through flower service a big hit in Kawasaki as Mother's Day arrives
A wholesale market in Kawasaki near Tokyo did a roaring trade in flowers for Mother's Day - with a minimum of person-to-person contact amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Customers ordered and paid for Mother's Day flowers on the website of 2020 Smile Flower Project, a drive-through service run by a retail chain operator with the help of markets and wholesalers. At the drive-through, staff loaded the flowers into car trunks.
It wasn't the only drive-through service that has become popular during the pandemic. Food Supply, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler, offered a vegetable drive-through in Ota Ward and other areas.
Customers who received rice and various vegetable sets from Food Supply also got a free carnation. The company gave away some 2,000 carnations.
“I hope families who usually refrain from going out will become happy” by receiving the carnations, said Food Supply President Atsushi Takekawa. (Kyodo)

How do koalas drink? These scientists say they finally know the answer
How do koalas drink enough water to survive? For a long time, scientists have asked this question. Now, at last, they know the answer. In a new article published on May 2 in the journal Ethology, scientists looked at 46 observations of koalas in the wild from 2006 to 2019, mostly at You Yangs Regional Park in Australia’s Victoria state. The study said that koalas lick water running down tree trunks. This helps boost the water they get from eucalyptus leaves - their main diet. Eucalyptus leaves have a high water content.
The study was important because it showed that observing animals in the wild helps tell us about an animal’s normal behavior, said Valentina Mella, the study’s lead author.
“If we watch them carefully, they will tell us,” she said.
Koalas spend most of their lives high up in eucalyptus trees, eating around 500 grams to 800 grams of eucalyptus leaves a day. (Reuters)
