“Phantom Home Run”
This is a story of a boy who loves baseball and one of big name sluggers in the major league. This boy lost his eyesight in an accident in his early childhood.
When he reached the age of 10, his doctor told bad news to his parents.
“The reason why he lost his eyesight is because he damaged his brain. His brain is gradually losing its function still now. At this rate, he will lose his life someday.”
“There is no choice but to perform surgery of the brain. He may get his eyesight back, if he is lucky. However, there is a high risk with the major procedure.”
The parents made a difficult decision for the surgery and told their son. But he didn’t want to have surgery in the brain.
The boy really loved baseball and he was an big fan of one of the top five sluggers in the major league. Then, they had an idea that their son may agree to have the surgery if the major leaguer met him in person and persuade him. They made every effort to contact the major leaguer and were finally able to meet their son with the slugger.
“It’s better to have the surgery for both you and your parents who are really concerned about you, isn’t it?”
“I know, but I’m really scared because it is a surgery of the brain.”
“But, if you would hit a homerun for me, I will…..”
“What did you say?”
“I promise to have the surgery, if you hit a homerun for me in the next game. I will be brave for surgery!”
The major leaguer was surprised by the boy’s offer. It meant if he couldn’t hit a homerun the boy may not accept the surgery. But inspired by the boy’s passion, he responded,
“Ok, I accept your offer. I will hit a homerun for you in the next game. In turn, you should have the surgery if I keep the promise.”
Leaked to mass media by a media-person of the team, this episode immediately got a lot of attention across the U.S.
A big headline, “Called homerun, a promise with a blind boy!” appeared in newspapers the next morning. The media reports gave great attention to the game. The boy was also eagerly waiting for the live coverage from the radio in a hospital room.
At 6:30 p.m. the game was started. Unexpectedly, he didn’t score a homerun until the 7th inning was completed.
In the 9th inning of the game, with runners on second and third and two outs, his team was two runs behind. If he hit a homerun in this inning, it would be walk off-win.
The pitcher showed his grip of the fastball. The stadium was in an uproar knowing that the pitcher was about to throw a fastball.
The fight between the ace pitcher and the slugger was dragged into 3-ball-2-strike, the full count. The pitcher called a straight ball again for the last throw.
He took a full swing for the last spirited and powerful straight ball of the pitcher.
“Please, hit a homerun!” Everybody in the ball park, those who were watching it on TV and the boy listening to the radio prayed to the heaven.
However, the ball was caught by the catcher’s mitt. The game was over.
At that moment, an announcer of the live radio broadcast shouted.
“He did it! He hit a homerun out of the park! It’s a great, great homerun, it’s as if it reaches the moon!”
Calling the boy’s name, “Do you hear this great cheering for him? He has kept the promise with you. Now, it’s your turn to hit a homerun by yourself on the surgery. And someday in the future after the surgery, you have to visit the stadium to watch homeruns with your own eyes, right?” the announcer finished the broadcast.
In a newspaper the next morning, we found such an article.
“His performance in the game yesterday was one for four and 2 Ks. However, one of the 2 Ks was an astonishing homerun.”
Yes, everybody saw it, a wonderful homerun only seen by heart. The announcer on the radio reported the homerun.
A year later, standing at the ball park was a boy who had been blind. In his eyes, the paths of the slugger’s homeruns were clearly reflected. The illusory homerun has turned into the real homerun over the years.
「幻のホームラン」
これはアメリカのある田舎町に住む野球好きの少年と、メジャー屈指のスラッガーの物語です。この野球好きの少年は、小さな頃に事故で視力を失いました。
そして少年が１０歳になった時、少年の両親は主治医から衝撃の事実を伝えられます。
「彼の目の見えなくなった理由は、事故で彼の脳が大きなダメージを負ったからです。彼の脳は今でも少しずつ失われています。このままではやがて、彼は命を落としてしまうでしょう」
「脳の手術を行うしかありません。運が良ければ、また目も見えるようになるでしょう。ただ、大きな手術になるので当然大きなリスクも伴います」
両親は悩んだ末に手術を行うことを決意し、そのことを息子にも伝えますが、頭の中の手術ということで彼はなかなか首を縦に振ろうとしません。
少年は大の野球好きで、メジャーリーグでも５本の指に入るあるスラッガーと彼のチームの大ファンでした。そこで両親は、そのメジャーリーガーが直接息子に会って説得をしてくれれば手術を決断してくれるのではないかと考え、手を尽くしてそのメジャーリーガーとコンタクトを取り、少年とメジャーリーガーの面会を実現させました。
「君のためにも、君のことを心配してくれる両親のためにも、手術を受けてくれないか？」
「でも頭の手術だっていうし、すごく怖いんだよ。」
「ただ、もしあなたが僕のためにホームランを打ってくれるなら…」
「何だって？」
「次の試合、あなたが僕のためにホームランを打ってくれるなら、手術を受ける。手術を受ける勇気が沸いてくると思う！」
少年の申し出にメジャーリーガーは戸惑いました。もしもホームランを打てなかったら、少年は手術を受けてくれないかもしれません。しかし、彼は少年の熱意に押され、
「わかった。次の試合、君のためにホームランを打つよ。だから君も、僕がホームランを打ったら手術を受けるんだよ」と、答えていました。
この話はチームの広報担当者がマスコミにリークしていたために、すぐに全米のメディアに取り上げられることになりました。
翌日の新聞には「予告ホームラン、盲目の少年と約束」という大きな見出しが載りました。当日の試合はメディアによる報道もあり、大変な注目の中で行われることになりました。少年もラジオの実況中継が始まるのを病室で待ちわびていました。
午後６時３０分、試合が始まりました。球場の誰もがホームランを期待していましたが、７回終了時点で彼の成績は3打数1安打1三振、ホームランはまだ打てていませんでした。
迎えた９回裏の最終打席。２アウト２、３塁、１対３、２点差で負けている場面でした。ここでホームランを打てば逆転サヨナラ、彼のチームの勝利です。次のバッターは絶不調だったので、ここは彼を一塁に歩かせてもいい場面でした。しかし、相手チームのエースはマウンドでストレートの握りを彼に見せました。予告ホームランに対し予告ストレート、この相手エースの予告投球に、スタジアムは騒然となりました。相手エースとスラッガーの勝負は２－３のフルカウントまでもつれました。相手エースは、最後の一球もストレートを予告しました。
最後にエースが投げた渾身のストレートを、彼はフルスイングしました。
「お願い打って！！」球場にいた人たちも、テレビで見ていた人たちも、ラジオで聞いていた少年も、皆が天に祈りました。
しかしボールはキャッチャーミットの中。試合終了です。
その時でした。実況をしていたラジオのアナウンサーが叫びました。
「やりました！打ちました！！大きな打球がスタジアムを超えて場外へ、月に届くかのような大きな大きなホームランです！！」
アナウンサーは少年の名前を呼んで言いました。「聞こえるかい、すごい声援だろう？ 彼は見事に君との約束を果たしたんだ。今度は君自身が手術でホームランを打つんだよ。そして手術を成功させて、いつの日か君の目でホームランを見にスタジアムに来るんだ」と締めくくりました。
明くる日の新聞にこんな言葉がありました。
「昨日の試合、彼の成績は４打数１安打２三振。ただそのうちの１三振は、見事なホームランだった」
誰もが目撃したのです。心でしか見えないホームランを。ラジオのアナウンサーはそのホームランを見事に実況したのです。
１年後、球場にはかつて盲目だった少年の姿がありました。少年の瞳には、スラッガーの放つ豪快なホームランの軌跡がはっきりと映っていました。幻のホームランは、時を超えて本物のホームランになったのです。
