Caves of hercules morocco The Caves of Hercules (Les Grottes d’Hercule) are something of a symbol for Tangier, with their strange sea window, shaped like a map of Africa. The name, like Hercules’ legendary founding of Tangier, is purely fanciful, but the caves, 16km outside the city and above the Atlantic beach. The Caves of Hercules are partially manmade and naturally formed. Much of the cavern’s interior was created while quarrying for millstone, which left marks that are still visible. The most distinctive feature of the Caves of Hercules is the opening to the sea. David explains it looks like the continent of Africa in reverse.. If you look close enough you’ll see it too. Admission to the Caves of Hercules is just 10 DH per person. It is a very interesting day trip for nature lovers. Outside the caves there are a handful of cafes and shops. History : • 6000BC Neolithic habitation • 1878 cave re-discovered • 1900's the cave was used as a brothel • 1920 cave open to the public • 1952 declared a National Heritage site • 1982 electric lights installed • 1995 October 23, British rock group Def Leppard played a concert in the cave (along with concerts in London and Vancouver, Canada), thereby becoming the first rock group to play 3 concerts on three continents in 1 day.
